I certainly live up to my name - Special Needs!!
I have just trawlled through n early 2000 'Phillips' surnames looking for the service records of my husband's grandfather on A***y using the free WW1 records. (I don't know if I can access them after thus weekend even though I subscribe to AY)
and his gt gt uncle 'Jones'
I successfully found their medal cards about a year ago but that took some time.
Can anyone locate the Service Records for either men?
GRIFFITH JOHN PHILLIPS, SERVICE NUMBER : 1108891
REUBEN EVAN JONES, SERVICE NUMBER : 9635
Can anyone point me in the right direction please.
Many thanks
SNG

There is a strong possibility they may not have survived. More than half the records were destroyed by fire during the WW2 Blitz.
I can't find my great-uncle's records, though I'd dearly love to. Strangely, I found his brother's war records and another brother's medal card, but that still leaves gt-uncle, who was killed, and 3 other brothers!

Yes I know a lot of the records were lost in WW2.
Its awfully odd though that every name I search for appears not to be there!!
We found out through the Commonwealth War Graves that Reuben died in a battle in the Somme. His name is on the Mennin Gate.
We went to Cardiff yesterday to see if we could find Reuben Jones's name on the war memorial there. It appears there was no mention of him there either!!
It become very frustrating when time is spent searching only to find very little or nothing.
Thanks for your help.
best wishes
SNG
There is this in the Silver War Badge records on A****try

Date of enlistment 1/9/1914
Date of discharge 16/4/1917 due to wounds

Couldn't pin down a record for Reuben Jones though.
Pheno
I guess Reuben won't be recorded as this is only a list of those discharged due to wounds or sickness - it won't feature those killed in action.
Pheno
Hang on a minute!
We found out through the Commonwealth War Graves that Reuben died in a battle in the Somme. His name is on the Mennin Gate.Β
Now then. If he was killed on the Somme (in FRANCE) and has no known grave, his name will be on the Thiepval Memorial.
The Menin Gate is in Ypres (in Flanders,BELGIUM) and commemorates those killed there who have no known grave. I've just found him on the CWGC website, and Menin Gate is correct, so he was killed in one of the Ypres battles
As you know the date he died and his regiment, you could try the war despatches at the National Archives to find out where the Welsh regiment was on that day. He may even get a mention.
