Can anyone out there possibly help me?
My father recently told me that he remembers certain details being told to him about his late fathers service during the war but, to date, I have had no joy in obtaining any records relating to him. What we know is:
Name: Albert Leslie MAUDE
D.O.B. April 1898
Place of Birth and Residence: Halifax, Yorkshire
We know that he volunteered to join the army, not sure what regiment.
He sailed on the SS Norman to South Africa in 1912, although this would make him only 14! He was a Marconi Radio Operator on board.
He was blown up and gassed but we don't know any other details.
He joined the Royal Flying Corp in it's early days.
He died in 1930 in Halifax

Thank you so much for your quick reply. The journey to and from US is totally new to us. I am stuggling to find the record though. I Googled "Passenger Ships and Images" which led me to Ancestry.co.uk. I have purchased some credits but when I found "Canada" all I can see is a photo. Sorry to be a bit slow but I am new to this!

Thanks JC - I haven;t got access to that resource on my Ancestry sub. Had a look on the free Find My Past search but can;t see them so assuke they are mistranscribed
another possible Medal index, which I think is more likely as this one also received a Silver War Badge (given to those that were injured or sick). If Albert was gassed and severely injured then he is very likely to have received one and a pension, though I can't see a pension record for him

SWB - RFC/223
looking at the SWB entry on ancestry, I think it confirms its the right one
Name: Albert Leslie Maude
Discharge Unit: R.F.C.
Regiment Number: 15816
Rank: 1/A.M.
Badge Number: 349011
Unit: Royal Flying Corps (Farnborough)
Piece: 3244
List Number: RFC 0001-0398
Record Group: WO
Record Class: 329
says he was 21 years and 3 months when he was discharged 11 Mar 1918
he enlisted 17 Dec 1914
going back to the original post stating that Albert was on the SS Norman in 1912
that was pre-war and would have been Merchant seaman. 14 Seems a little young to be a marconi operator but then maybe he was a very bright boy. I do wonder why then he changed from merchant seaman to Royal Flying corp, unless of course he really wanted to be an airman, obviously intelligent enough!
I would have thought he would have proudly told his son he was in the RFC
Merchant seamen records are at the National Archives... I did a quick search but his name didn't come up. You might want to have another look though.

Not sure how Harmon Richardson is related - Henry Maude married Ellen Louida Stawman in Halifax Q2 1894
On the record it says H Richardson (uncle) who lives at the save town as the Maudes are going to be staying....
I'll go and do a quick check on the Canadian census
I meant the US Fed census, couldn't find Killery ME anywhere so looked for Richardson in Maine from England and came up with this, its a transcription error again and should read RICHARDSON
1900 US Fed census
Name: Henry Richards
[Henry Richardson]
[Henry Richard]
Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ in 1900: Portland, Cumberland, Maine
[Portland, Cumberland, Maine]
Age: 31
Birth Date: Nov 1868
Birthplace: England
Race: White
Gender: Male
Immigration Year: 1894
Relationship to Head of House: Head
Father's Birthplace: England
Mother's Birthplace: England
Spouse's Name: Alice C Richards
Marriage Year: 1890
Marital Status: Married
Years Married: 10
Henry Richards 31 born England
Alice C Richards 30 born England
William H Richards 7 born England
Alice M Richards 7months born maine
immigration year 1891
they live in KELLOGG STREET Portland, I'm wondering if the address was poorly written on the letter from Uncle Henry and by the time it got transcribed into the passenger list it turned from Kellogg to Killery
now to find them in england to see if its the right family
If anyone with a FMP sub can take a look at the passenger lists leaving in England to see if there is anything to add to the above family leaving for Boston....
thanks
I think this is what you want
passenger transcript details
Name: Henry RICHARDSON

Passenger destination: Portland, USA
Date of Birth:

Passengers on voyage: 50
He is described as single though so maybe married in US.
Pheno
Although I think this is the detail to go with Henry Richards(on) I am not convinced that Henry is the Harmon referred to previously.
There are two Harman Richardson birth entries in Yorkshire around the right time: one Q2 1866 and the other Q2 1870.
Think I might do a bit more digging!
Pheno
Just to finish off there is a Harman Richardson born 1861 Halifax, Yorkshire, son of Henry Richardson and Elizabeth Bland in the 1861/1871/1881 & 1901 censuses but interestingly enough not appearing in 1891.
Wonder if this is any connection - being as he was born Halifax, Yorks.
