Have you looked on Scotland's People?, the obvious place is the 1911 census. Was this a second marriage, have you checked for a marriage and possible children in Scotland?.
On the marriage certificate 14/03/1942 is he described as a bachelor?

Thank you 'folks' for all your collective idea's to my plea for help. Nothing has materialised on any front in Ancestry. I have not been on the Scotland People Site for some six months or more so did
not realise that the 1911 Census had been issued (something to do now the winter is on its way)
and yes he is listed as a bachelor on the Marriage Certificate. Any other thoughts, as where to search
would be gratefully received, as I have 'hit' the inevitable brick wall. Snezzy
There is a Merchan Seaman record for a Peter Mclaren joined 1930 aged 25 but he was born Hamilton.
There is also a P McLaren from the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders who was a POW at Saalhaus Colditz - Army No. 92192, Camp No. 04C, (OFLAG) POW No. 969. He was a Lieutenant.
I don't know whether this is your chap. Someone with better knowledge of POWs than me will be able to help. It might me worth looking at TNA to see if there is any more info about his full name etc.

Thank you for your message Jo, the first about a Merchant Seaman was very interesting as his Mother's (middle name) was Hamilton! Could you please advise me where you were able to find
this information - TNA is that the National Archives at Kew? Regards Snezzy
Hi
The information is on FMP (Find My Past) under Merchant Seamen 1918 - 1941. There isn't really a great deal of information. There are three images for Peter Mclaren. As stated born Hamilton, enlisted at Glasgow for the first two. The third one is dated 1921 so not him. But the other two I think are the same fellow - but different ships 2nd May 1930 and 27th May 1930 aged 25. The thing that may be 'searchable' is the Discharge number for him R 85957 and is in the series BT349, which I assume is the reference for TNA The National Archives as you correctly summised and is searchable on line, though with limitations.
