Can anyone help me with Naomi Horne born in 1851 in Great Billing, Northamptonshire; the daughter of James Horne and Jane Bustin?

Naomi appears in the Great Billing 1861 census returns with her parents, and her brothers Alfred & James, although the family name is spelled Horn without the 'e'. I can pick her up in the 1881 (Great Billing) and 1891 (Trumpet Inn, Weston Flavell) censuses along with some new brothers. Although Naomi had a daughter (Henrietta b. 1876) she does not seem to have married.

My problem comes in the 1871 census. I can find the Horne family at 1 New Road, Great Billing but Naomi herself is missing. She would have been 19 or 20 and was probably away working. In 1881 she is recorded as being a parlour maid so for her to have been a resident domestic servant in 1871 seems highly likely. I've tried the plausible miss-spellings of both her names but to no effect. My guess is that she is not very far away since the whole family stayed in Northampton and Naomi died there as late as 1947.

Do you experts have any ideas for me?

    With thanks, TP

Tricky but I see the rest of the family are under Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ in 1871 so had a look for a Naomi Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ and found one as a servant housemaid in Sutton Surrey.

It says she is 30 not 20 but that could be an error as there is a line through the age box.

Birthplace down as Great Bentley Northants but it looks more like Billing to me.

Just out of interest what name is she under in 1881 as a parlour maid?

I can only see this Naomi Horne in Gt Billing with parents James and Jane but she is born 1859. Is this a different family? Sorry to confuse if so.

    Hi Tournie

Thanks for the suggestions. The 1881 record is the right family. I am sure that Naomi was born in 1851. Her occupation as parlour maid comes from her daughter Henrietta's birth certificate.

    Kind regards

    TP

FMP has her transcribed as Horne , and the birth place is Gt Billing , though the age , as you say is hard to decipher

Thank you both very much. I've now looked at the record and am sure it's the right girl. Why she is in Surrey I don't know, but I notice the family cook is also from Northamptonshire.

Tracking down what Naomi got up to between Spring 1871 and her daughter's birth in December 1875 may be impossible but you've narrowed it down for me.

    Brilliant!

    TP
