Researching her family at the moment and could do with some help.
At the Gloucester RO found a baptism for Mary Ann Major, Winchcome, mother a single woman called Esther Major.
The only other information I have is this
On the 1881 census Esther Staite widow (MIL) living with her daughter and SIL James Langston and Mary Ann in Evesham. Esther was born 1827 Lower Guilting, Mary Ann was born 1850 Winchcombe. In 1864 Esther Major married a Thomas Staite in Winchcombe.
Now the census have not been of great help, Found a Mary Ann Major living in Cheltenham working as a servant on the 1871 census otherwise nothing.
Also cannot find a birth reg for Mary Ann Major, nor can I find a baptism for Esther Major. I have searched the Gloucester BMD site and there are a few births for a Mary Ann Major but wrong Mother
Any help would be appreciated

Thanks Mabel,
Since starting the previous thread I've written off the Major marriage and also the Greening connection.

Thats Tourmie, Forgot about the 1871 census, but causes another quiry, where is the connection between Job Greening and the Staite's
This family has caused me a real headache. If the baptism of Mary Ann in 1853 is the Mary Ann I'm searching her Mother Esther was not married. The 1861 census you found mother and daughter are in a workhouse plus another child (think he is called Charles?) Tourmie, did it say if Esther was a widow or single?

Yes Ewan, I have and the mother's surname is Atkins (on the gloucester BMD site it gives the mother's surnames) and of course Mother was not married.
Thanks

I didn't want to put too much in case it was down the path you had already discounted but Job was with Thomas and Esther one year as a step son then on another year was wifes child if I remember right.
Maybe his parents died as he seems to be with them in 1851 and they adopted him but wifes child is a bit incriminating isn't it
I'm not sure if the workhouse family is yours but there is a nice black line over the names hence the ??Ann. If I remember the young one was a boy and the name did look like it started with a C.
The older one was a man and the other a woman widowed but her age wasn't right to be Esther I don't think.

I have no access to censuses, perhaps a Mr Mrs Cox (urgh that name haunts me) or Mr Mrs Stanley on the 1861 census can be found.
Looking briefly at the index for findmypast it may be Cox. (a big maybe as I have limited resources)

Oh dear its getting confusing with all these different surnames.
Tourmie, what I cannot get my head around is the Greening family in 1851. If the Mary Ann Major baptised 1853 her mother was called Esther Major and she was not married so the Esther Greening on the 1851 census must be a totally different person and yet job Greening was around when Esther Major and Thomas Staite married in 1864.

Yes I know it's a puzzler. Coincidence they are both called Esther - do we have your Esther in 1851? She can't be both women if she is somewhere else at the same time.
Presume this is the Greening marriage that produced Job.

So John and Esther Greening are Job's parents, but that Ester cannot be Mary Ann's Mother. If one could find the birth reg it would help but looks to me that she never registered the child just had her baptised in 1853.

Siamese, sorry for posting those birth details (illegitimate ones) I hadn't read it properly and not realised you knew it was Major as a surname. I have had a look for a birth from 1849 to 1855 Gloucestershire using any first name with the surname of Major and Mary Ann as a first name with any surname but with no luck.
Only recently I was looking for someone, she and her 6 or so siblings had all been baptised and all of them I could find a birth registration for but not for her. I could not understand why her siblings had been registered but not her, unless she was registered in another district. These things are certainly sent to try us, I hope a birth registration does turn up for you, I will keep looking and wait with interest.
Ewan

Having another dabble at this one.
Esther Major m Thomas Staite 1864. If she was born 1817 then she would have been 47 and had Mary Ann when she was around 36. A little late in life for a first child and a first marriage in those days.
Esther Harker m John Greening 1843. This Esther born 1821. Job born 1848.
Now the 1861 for Staite family has Job as step son and Esther born 1821 Toddington.
1871 for Staite family has Job son of wife and Esther born 1817 Toddington.
I am wondering if there is only one Esther and she is widowed from Jobs father and marries Thomas even though the surnames don't match up
Important to find both Esthers at the same time but haven't yet. Will look for a death for John Greening.
Incidentally the nephew with them in 1861 Harry Culling 7 was born South Australia!

Well there's the marriage of Mary Ann using the name Major so is really puzzling. I am backtracking and thinking there are 2 Esthers now but I can't see how Job seems to go from one Esther to another at all

Thanks for all your help, certainly a puzzle. I see you found Mary's marriage to James Langston. (Langston James Evesham 6c 574
Major Mary Ann Evesham 6c 574 )
I have been over to Gloucester RO again and had a look at the original marriage document for Thomas Staite which confirms the original thinking about the Staite/Major/Light families which I had written off.
18th May 1864 marriage between Esther Major age 37 widow, and Thomas Staite age 38 widower. Esther's father Isaac Light and Thomas's father John Staite.

Oh that's new information So if Esther was a widow in 1864 Major wasn't her birth name? And her father was called Light so she was born Esther Light?
I need to go have a lie down!
Link to this forum: Mary Ann Major.............................
Ok how's this for a wild card. Mary Ann is born illegitimately under the name Light and mother marries after she is born then baptises her under the name Major? The dates fit chronologically ie birth, marriage then baptism.

Tourmie, wow I think you've cracked the mystery of Mary Ann's birth registration .... good on ya gal!
Siamese will no doubt be checking it out but the birth registration is under the 'mum's surname' with no 'mum's former name' or 'dad's name' mentioned. Μύ
