Hi all, I have found out my mother (now passed away) was adopted. Her middle name was Irlam, and I have dependable info that her birth mother was called Alice Irlam, born in Fylde. I would like to trace her family.
Mothers adopted parents name was Stevens.
Any help greatly appreciated.
Forgot to say, my mothers first name was Florence, and she was born in November 1918
Welcome to the board. Your first messages (about 20) have to be read by the moderators first, which is why they don't appear straight away, possibly not for an hour or so. It doesn't mean there is anything wrong, so don't worry.
Official adoption didn't start until 1928, so your mother may have been adopted through a charity or church organisation, so it makes searching a little more difficult, and we are not allowed to discuss living people for Data Protection reasons (see 'House Rules' on the right)
There is a lady on here, one of the regular members, who knows a lot about searching for birth famlies. I think she is out at the moment, but she always suggests joining 'Family Tree Forum', which is free, you just have to register. They have a special section for adoption queries, and it is screened from search engines like G**gle for privacy

Do you have Florence's birth certificate - think this might indicate Alice's age as she is proving elusive to spot. I cannot see Irlams really having a presence on FreeBMD in the Fylde registration district until 1913 (apart from one death in 1842 and another in 1900). There are two older Irlam females in the Fylde area in the 1911 census

I'm not sure if I can get a birth certificate - is it possible to obtain copies anywhere?
I found Florence Irlam on a BMD site too, I am told she was born in Blackpool, so Fylde seems to fit the bill. I am pretty sure this is my mother. I suppose that doesn't mean that Alice Irlam had to come from that district though.
Any suggestions where I go from here?

I have joined Family Tree Forum, tried to message you but just get the message "Your account has been activated but you are currently in the moderation queue to be added to the forum.."
I will be in touch as soon as I can - in fact I am eager to get any info I can about my mothers natural family!
OK I will await your message and watch for your user name to show up over there.

< I'm not sure if I can get a birth certificate - is it possible to obtain copies anywhere? >
See for details - this gives the proper prices. Use the details from the entry posted abve to order the birth certificate. Some genealogy sites also offer this service but with very high prices in comparison
