I was watching Who Do You Think You Are Series 8 episode 2 J.K. Rowling, and found this very interesting. I wonder where she found records of her great grandfather Louis Volant's medal award, in the programme a military person shows her the details of Louis Volant's medal which he explained that it wasn't the Legion de Honeur but the Croix de Guerre that Louis was awarded. My grandfather was awarded the Croix de Guerre for bravery in WW1 in France and I wondered if anybody knows where the details are kept in France, that I could contact for my grandfather.
Here's a link to the WDYTYA magazine site and the JK Rowling episode. It mentions where the medal records are, so have a look round the website. I think you can contact them too, if you don't find exactly what you want.
Drat! Forgot the link!
this link will take you to Cyndi's list which has a whole section covering genealogy research for France and I am sure you will find what you want on there and possibly a Forum where you can ask people who are experienced in French Research.
Good Luck with it,
Edna
