Dear All
I was researching the 1851 census the other day for one of my ancestors and it stated his occupation as a Chelsea Pensioner yet in 1841 he was a Shuffer Maker
anyway ..i was wondering if any kind person would happen to know how i can search for the Chelsea Pension records for him
His name was William Langford born 1770 or 1771 in Erdington Warwickshire England ...and how i could trace him back furthur for example his siblings and parents i did try doing this on the IGI Familysearch site however the only match is 1762 which isn't him
any help with be most appreciated
my greatest of gratitude
Ste
have you looked at the pension records on the National Archives or FMP?
i have tried FMP however i am only a free member also cannot find it on the national archives
regards
ste

FMP lists 3 William Langfords with no dates... I guess they would be included in the above
for ref 1851
Name Age
John Langford 42 manufacturer of Britannia ?
Mary Langford 45
Emma Langford 16
William Langford 80 father chelsea pensioner Erdington SHROPS
Alice Woodward 60 MIL
I'm guessing he must be the pensioner Born Cardington Shrops, but a transcription error...
thank you for this info the Cardington Shropshire looks interesting as in the 1851 census they recorded birthplace as Erdington Shropshire do you think its possible that they the place of birth in the census incorrect as in 1841 it states Warwickshire
regards ste
There is a William Langford on FMP discharged 13 Feb 1816 aged 46 from Cardington Shropshire. Served 12 yrs 184 days
I see on the 1851 census he states Erdington, Shropshire. I am wondering if the enumerator put Erdington as they were in Warwickshire.
Jo
yes thats the 1851 census i have but in 1841 it lists Warwickshire as his birth place could see if you could the same william in the 1841 please regards ste
There isn't a great deal of information. States he enrolled when he was 34 on 8 Aug 1803 but I am assuming that was guess work based on when he was discharged in Feb 1916 aged 46 (served 12 years - so rounded out) He was discharged at Bletchington. Of the 81st foot
1 yr 164 days as a private
3 years as a corporal
8 yrs 20 daysas a sergeant
discharged for old age

It's a free site Ste but you need to post a few messages before you can use the pm system.
ok thank you jo i will join
does the records for william langford show any occupation by any chance
regards ste
Apologies for the dealy in replying.
Early records do not really give a lot on information. There are just two pages for him. Later records do have a section for where he is to live and his employment.
This is a blank page (not pre printed) But there is a mention of Cardington and Whitesmith which would fit in with Snuffer maker.
If you have joined the other forum, let us know your user name and I can send you the image.

Hi Ste,
Not sure if I am allowed to mention this but I know a branch of the Langford family in Shropshire and I think only recently have heard mention that one of them was a Chelsea pensioner but no more than that I'm afraid.
I won't be able to find out anymore until the end of November but if I do I will post a message then...

I would say that the William Langford born in Cardington would be most likely, except that 34 years of age is old to join the Army but not the militia. I have found Erdington in the census for Oddington in Gloucestershire, so I woudn't take it that it was Erdington, especialy with Shropshire added.
If you can find his death certificate then it should say Chelsea Pensioner and the War Office had a number of pension branches who woud have been paying out his pension and would have needed to mark him as dead. The pension payments records (whch are not thesame as the individual pension/service records) are at The National Archives, Kew, and arranged by districts, eg Birmingham or Warwickshire/Worcestershire.
hi all
sorry for the delayin replying to the above messages i thank everyone who has helped
