Can anyone suggest places to start looking for information about the death of John Steel/e? So far I have not found reference to his death in the UK BMD. A family story passed down has told us that he died when his son, who was born in 1828, was still only a toddler. We were also told that he had died in a hunting accident and was living in Cumberland England (he was from the Whitehaven area where his son Richard was born). Would it be possible for his accident to have been mentioned in a newspaper for that time period - and which paper should I start looking up? I do know that his wife, Christian/a Kinley, had re married in 1839 on the Isle of Man.

Registration of BMDs did not start until 1837 so the only way is Parish Rec'ds on Familysearch or from Cumberland record office but without further info it may cost you for a search to be done.

Hi Edna
I've searched in familysearch.com numerous times since these records became available online. Before that I searched the fiche and CD roms. The closest I can get to a possible birth for John Steele is in 1804 at Holy Trinity, Whitehaven. That was the same parish his son was born in in 1828. Maybe he is buried there as well?
