I need to obtain a copy of a Will written in 1997 in France: can anyone help me with the steps, and indeed if it is possible!
Cyndi's List is a great help for all Countries and this is a list of Genealogy sources in France.
There is a Forum on the list which may give you further information

I think you will need t know where the will was proved and the local Mairie (Town Hall) would be your best bet. I think if you can write in French, even if it is a few words, I find it is appreciated.
Contrary to what I said before, there is a central register mentioned and an address in this link (, If you type in wills and France into a search engine it will come up.
I’ve just had to go through some of the aspects of this myself.
A will (testament) in France can be made simply in writing and the original kept at home or in a bank etc. It is of course preferable and these days the norm to carry out the process through a solicitor (notaire). Such a will is called a testament authentique and will be placed on a central register
(Fichier National des Dispositions de Dernières Volontés (FNDDV), so it can be recovered at a later date by any notaire who may be instructed to deal with the inheritance. If you have the original death certificate (acte décès) you can also consult the register yourself. (The death certificate can be obtained from the town hall (Mairie) of the place where the person died – this may not of course be where they lived). The FNDDV register will tell you where the original of the will is held, usually in the vaults of the notaire who processed the will.

Meles the moderators will not let you add a link that they dont like, but of course you may be able to add it without it having the http bit included which sometimes can get through.
Rules do say no links to websites or no personal details so they will remove things while you are in premod.
