Hello hunters,
Please help with my search for:
STEPHEN CULLEN b.1797 - d.1854c
married:
HELENA FITZGERALD b.(c)1814 -d.?
Clifton Bristol.
I've got 3/4 children - Stephanus, Maria Anna and Ellen (although have two entries on Fam search for Maria Anna (do you think one of the girls died and then the parents named the next female the same?)
I would like to get more info on Stephen senior b.1797 and where he was born please and who his parents were?
Also anything on Helena Fitzgerald b.1814
Any info appreciated...
thank you

There are two entries for Helena 1832 and 1836 with these parents but can not find a death for Helena between these years.

Thanks Edna...I'm brickwalling with this couple...I think also that both of them came into the UK via Ireland - but where in Ireland I've no idea...I've got a few possibles for Helena's parents but only one parent possible for Stephanus - Marty Cullen/Cullin...
Still hunting - thank you

I think they must both have Irish ancestry given their names...CULLEN and FITZGERALD...also that their children/children etc have been working the docks in Bristol and then later moving up to Liverpool docks again...jumping forward a generation - Maurice Abbott married Ellen Cullen and he was a dock worker...
just a maybe...only a 'maybe'

Oh that's lovely JC - a bootmaker - perhaps explains my passion for shoes!
I think our posts landed at the same time BTW...Do you think 'Helena' is in fact the 'Ellen' you post here as their daughter was called Ellen...?
anything else?

there looks like there are 2 entrys for Maria Anna Cullen in jul 1836, I think you need to see
the actual records. The first one may have been a private baptism
looks like they married in Ireland then came straight over to England
You do really need to know, their faith and parish they came from to find them in Ireland pre-civil registration
Link to this forum: Clifton, Bristol.c. 1790's- 1840's+ Stephami Cullen, Helenae Fitzgerald
no, that should be his wife, unless of course he had a daughter the same age as himself
I only found the 3 baptisms
when was daughter Ellen born? and were there any more children. it helps to narrow down a marriage date
I have loads of bootmakers in my tree... If ever I write a book on them its going to be called "A Load of Old Cobblers!" lol!
Link to this forum: Clifton, Bristol.c. 1790's- 1840's+ Stephami Cullen, Helenae Fitzgerald
That's a point - I really have no idea what religion they were - although knowing my family likely Protestants - although you never know really...how do I find that out?
Thanks JC

As they were written in Latin, I'm guessing Catholic

Stephen Callen 54 shoemaker born ireland
Ellen Cullen 34 born bristol!
Ellen Cullen 1 daughter
So Stephen's wife Ellen decreased her age by at least 10 years between 1841 and 1851 and changed birth location.
Seeing there were no children at home with them in 1841, I suspect little Ellen may be a grandaughter. Do you have her birth cert?

I think the age is correct...there was a bit of a gap between Stephen and Helena...
Actually I think baby Ellen was born in Liverpool - i will check again - no I don't have a cert....still trawling another line of the family - it will be a while before I get around to getting this line certs!
Although - again - knowing my female line - they were very creative with their ages - must have been great moisturisers back in the day!
Must dash...back later...
thank you everyone

Can't see Ellen or Mary obviously on 1861 - what confuses me is the baptisms are clear that Ellen/Elizabeth Elln Fitzgerald is their mother, but if she was wife 1 b c1801 b Ireland as per the 1841 census she can't be the younger wife b Bristol on 1851, presumably mother of Mary

HI MB...
I just searched the boards and saw this:
Maybe another hunter is searching a branch of the same family?
This search is going off wide now and I will have to get all the info together and do some more sleuthing...
thanks for your interest in this...
me too am a bit confused - seems like their life journey took them backwards and forwards between Bristol and Liverpool?

Could the fact that both places were great Sea Ports and some of my family who were mariners/engineers ventured between the two ports also.
I also have family between whitehaven and liverpool also two sea ports so possibly someone in the family worked on a ship perhaps a ships carpenter who would repair wooden structures
Just a thought

You're right Edna...a lot of my family lived next to the sea/ports and docks and worked on them too... I have been passionate about industrial ports for most of my life and remember Liverpool docks very well as a young girl - many of the males in my family were/are great travelers too and some were merchant seaman...my grandfather a dockworker as was my grandmothers family involved with ships. In those good old days Liverpool was a very busy place very vibrant...
oh happy days
