A bit macabre, but my Grandparent's house in Canning Town, E. London, was destroyed in the bombing of London in the winter of 1940/41. Fortunately they were unscathed.

Are there any records in existence which lists the dates on which properties suffered during the bombing?

    Many thanks

    Martyn

Doubt it Martyn., though they must have kept a record of property needing attention.
I wanted to know about people being billeted and how much those taking people in received. There was a Billeting Officer ,,and i figured that where money is concerned, records would certainly be kept ,but nothing could be found .
Old papers of no use would be cleared out i suppose., though i speak of Birkenhead.

There are WW2 bombing maps of London, which are colour coded to show the extent of the damage.

There are also Bomb cenuses which may provide more detail.

Many London borough libaries have a copy of the bombing maps, the library for Canning Town may have have more specific details re dates, injuries etc.

    John,

    Many thanks fort your reply.

Through talking to my fathe, I've narrowed the timescale to about three weeks - he was away at sea when the deed was done.

My Grandparents were billeted to Chelmsford, Essex, as all that remained of their house was a heap of rubble; the actual site of the house was identified by a elder bush, which had been growing in their back yard!

    Many thanks, 'urhistory',

This is most helpful; I will contact the local library for the area to see if they can come up trumps.
