Can anyone let me know what information would be provided on a death certificate from about 1950? I have found the dearth of my ancestor Charles John Aldrich and would like to know if the death certificate will tell me any information about his birth (date/place?) as I can not find any information on him before his marriage in 1917. Thanks

I have my grandmother's death certificate from 1957 in Leicestershire.

    Information is:
    - When and where died
    - Name and surname
    - Sex
    - Age
    - Occupation
    - Cause of death
    - Signature, description and residence of informant
    - When registered
    - Signature of registrar

So, that's a long way around to say no to your question about whether it will contain information about his birth date/place.

Other than cause of death and date of death, the rest is only good as the informant.
Even my grandad's death had his DOB out by 4 years! you would think my mum or her brother would have got closer than that. smiley - erm

There's an image on Ancestry of the marriage entry, 24 June 1917, Trinity Church, St Marylebone, London.

    For Charles it says

    Age 29
    Batchelor
Rank or profession - 24th Works Co, M'sex Regt
Residence at time of marriage - Parish of St Leonard's, Hythe [something] Kent
Father's name and surname - John Aldrich (deceased)
Rank or profession of father - Law writer

    to

    Margaret Agnes Mary Dutton
    30
    Spinster
    142 St Titchfield St (possibly)
    William Dutton (deceased)
    Soldier

    Does any of that help?

The information on death certificates in England and Wales was only started in the summer of 1969, not much help in the 1950s.

Thanks everyone, I already know about his marriage and therefore he was born in 1887 ish but don't know when and also can not find his birth/christening anywhere, or find him on any censuses. Doesn't seem to be a Charles Aldrich of that age with a dad called John.

According to the free 1911 census website, there's a 23yo Charles John Aldrich living in Paddington. Other Aldrichs living in Paddington are:

    Ellen 49
    Ellen 4
    Herbert 24
    Herbert 2
    Jessie 27

    Have you ruled him out?

I'm off out now, but if no-one's found him for you before I get back I'll see if I can find the actual image.

Many thanks for your suggestions but there doesn't seem to be anything concrete. He might be the one in Paddington in 1911 - though is anyone able to help with letting me know where this Charles John was born or how he's related to the others in the household? Maybe John Aldrich married Ellen? He might also be the butcher from Cambridge but I never heard anyone suggest that was his trade - and then I would need to find a birth in Cambridge in about 1888. I know he isn't the Charles related to James/Sarah Ann Thorne because that was a Charles FT Aldrich and I found his death a couple of years after the Charles John Aldrich death in 1950 ish (so there were defo two different people). Still struggling to find a birth of Charles John and get any further back on the Aldrich line. Thanks again for any help/suggestions
