Could you kind people please help me with these chaps? They belong to a cousin鈥檚 husband (CH) who has done some research himself and asked for my help, but I鈥檓 a bit stuck too.

Family Search has this entry for David jnr:

    name: David Francis Or Gough
    gender: Male
    baptism/christening date: 31 Jan 1830
    baptism/christening place: KERRY,MONTGOMERY,WALES
    father's name: David Gough
    mother's name: Elizabeth Francis
    indexing project (batch) number: C04949-2
    system origin: Wales-ODM
    source film number: 104468

CH has provided info that David snr and Elizabeth Francis married on 21 Mar 1831 in Churchstoke, Mont鈥檚hire, so it would appear that David jnr is illegitimate. How unusual would it have been to have the father鈥檚 name on the baptism register at that time?

On the 1841 census in Bahaillon, Mont鈥檚hire, there is :
    David snr, 30, Ag Lab
    Elizabeth, 30
    David jnr, 10
    Mary, 5,
    and
    Jane 3

And in the column 鈥淲hether born in same county鈥 there鈥檚 a 鈥淵鈥 against all five names.

By 1851 the family are still in Bahallion, although David jnr and Mary are living elsewhere. There are five extra children (Elizabeth 10, John 8, Thomas 6, Charles 3 and William 1). Now though, David Snr gives his place of birth as Mainstone, Shropshire and his age is 43 (meaning that he was born ~1808).

By 1861 David Snr, 52, and Elizabeth are in Kerry, Mont鈥檚hire with 20yr daughter Elizabeth, 12yo son Charles and 8yo daughter Ann. But, also with them are three grandchildren, William 8, Ruth 4 and Fanny 8mths 鈥 all three born Kerry, Mont鈥檚hire. All with the surname Gough. So, who鈥檚 children are they? None of David snr and Elizabeth鈥檚 children are old enough to have an 8yo or really, even a 4yo, but an 8mth old is poss.

By 1871, 62yo David Snr and Elizabeth are still in Kerry. All their children have moved on, but now they have three different Gough grandchildren 鈥 Frances 10, Selina 6 and Hannah 4- all born Kerry, Mont鈥檚hire. Who do they belong to, eh?

By 1881, 70yo David Snr and Elizabeth are still in Kerry, but now with four more different Gough grandchildren. William 8 b. Llandinam, Mont鈥檚hire, Isabella 6, George 4 and David Lloyd 3, all born Newtown, Mont鈥檚hire.

So .... can anyone help me sort out who are the parents of all the grandchildren? And can anyone help me get further back than David Snr and Elizabeth Francis?

Apologies for such a long message, but it鈥檚 all rather complicated as you can see.

    Thanks in advance
    STG

PS : Elizabeth must have been some woman. Not only did she bring up nine children of her own, she also brought up 10 grandchildren. Wow. Makes me exhausted just thinking about it.

Here are some of the baptisms of the children, there seems to have been two Elizabeths as there are two baptisms 1837 &1840and one burial the same year 1837

Davids baptism with two surnames the father must have been known to the person recording the baptism to have noted the father and mothers name

Don't know for sure, but suspect that the one christened on 7 Feb 1803, son of Samuel and Margaret Gough.

Although the age is a bit out, it's not as far out as that of the other one.

    Hi
I may have found one lot of parents.
There is a tree online that has Ruth Gough b 1857 as the daughter of Jane Gough. It also has the parents of David and Elizabeth Gough. Do you have access to An* or would you like me to copy it for you?

The marriage they have is David Gough to Elizabeth Stedman in 1834. They are both given with deaths in 1873.

Interestingly, in the Godwyn tree, they don't have David jnr as one of the children of David snr, even though they have the same 1841 census that I have for the family. And they have Ruth's mother, Jane, marrying someone called Thomas Gough and living in Buxton in 1871. I can't find a Gough-Gough marriage between 1861 (when Jane is a servant in Shropshire) and 1871 (when she's supposedly married and living in Buxton).

Think I'll send the owner a message.

    Thanks for that.
