Hiya,
Do you know you can now download the Metropolitan Police Certificates of Service free of charge from TNA, if you know the reference number by going to Records, Documents Online and then putting the reference number in the space provided in the top left-hand corner. I'm presently looking through these number by number (about 205 police records in each) to see if our James Edward Morgan was a policeman before he joined the Shanghai Municipal Council in July 1919.

Quickest and easiest method is to check the second link provided by Edna.
You would already know the approximate years from the census returns.
The documents will provide you with start and end date, and also which area they covered.
If you are still not sure, rootschat have a thread which was started by the man who filmed and put the docs online. He has been most helpful in providing tips on how to find your relatives. You can find it on the London and Middlesex Board> London and Middlesex resources Online
