I am trying to find out the date and reason for my late cousin's death. She was born in Prescot, Lancashire. The daughter of Mary Lyon and William Vernon. She was married to a Basil G D Duggan in 1948 in Conwy, Caernarvon. I believe she was a school teacher and walked into the sea at Llandudno, committing suicide. If any person knows anything about her or her family I would be most appreciative.

I have checked free BMD and nothing coming up on there for a death for Dorothy Duggan but it may not have the full index yet.
Have you checked the local newspapers for the area from your local Record Office
You can also check Ancestry at your local Library if they have a sub.
Someone here may find something for you.

FMP has deaths up to 2006, but nothing showing up there , except for a Dolly Duggan , but birth year is 1893 , so probably not her .
When was she born ? as I can't see a Vernon./ mmn Lyon birth

Is it possible that someone has told you this story to cover up for her walking out on a marriage as it does seem a bit drastic, Nothing coming up for a death in this name and if she had walked out and re married under another name then the death would be under the new name.
There would have been an inquest into the death even if no body was found as missing presumed dead?

Given the death I found, the suicide story for Dorothy seems unlikely

Basil remarries in 1977, in the London area, so divorce seems quite possible

Thanks for your help. I have had interesting replies from Canada with details of her emigrating to Canada with duggan and returning to Llandudno. This puts a new light on my aunt's story.
I will check with the Llandudno papers andd Library.

She was born in 1892 in Prescot, Lancashire, so was a maiden lady when she married.
I have had replies from Canada giving me sea passages for her and her husband, Basil. Also return dates. I know she commited suicide off Llandudno because I remember going with my mother to see someone in an Off licence who knew the story. Unfortunately, the shop is no longer there.
The mystery remains!

Thanks for that. The Lyon families were mainly from St Helens, Lancs, so I did not think of checking in Birkenhead area.
I am still searching for her death. I know there was a suicide because my mother took me to Llandudno years ago to an Off Licence and the man there talked about the finding of her clothes on the beach. However, whether a body was found I do not know.
The Off Licence no longer exsists.

Thanks. You have been most helpful and very busy. It may be that she was upset about a divorce.
I went to llandudno in the 50's with my mother and we saw a man who owned an Off licence. A relation, I think. He said that her clothes were found on the beach but whether a body was ever found, I do not know. It remains a mystery. If I discover more I will let you know.
