I have managed to trace my ancestry back to John Rowe (c1747), but have hit a very solid stone wall. Would anyone be able to give me help to scale it - and to eliminate my frustration?
John married Joan Warrin in December 1772 and produced five daughters and three sons. They lived in Tavistock, Devon at this time.
I have been unable to find details of John's parentage and siblings (if any), his place and date of birth/christening and where he was ultimately buried.
Any information or advice would be gratefully received.
Many thanks.

There are a few possible births for John in Devon at that time.
One to Sarah Rowe in Hartland
One to William and Elizabeth Stoke Dameral
One to William and Richord (?) Yealhampton
Any unusual names with the children? Do you know where they were born?
There are a lot of births to a John and a Joan in Devon/Cornwall.

You say you don't know where he is buried but do you know his date and whereabouts of death? If so you could try looking for a will which might contain details of siblings or even parentage. It was this route that eventually took me back over 100 years to 1633, albeit in Yorkshire.

Pheno,
Many thanks for your response.
Unfortunately I have no dates, or whereabouts of death.
As he and Joan raised the family in Tavistock, my presumption is that Tavistock could be where he is buried - but that is only a supposition.

Hello, Tormie,
Many thanks for your reply.
The three possibilities for parents are interesting in that both Hartland and the Plymouth area, figure in my tree at various times. Would you have any further information to that you have kindly supplied?
John and Joan parented several children - and all in Tavistock:
Ann and Elizabeth (1723); Ann (1776); Febe (1778); Ann (1781); John (1785); Francis (1789) and Richard (1791)
I hope this will be useful to you.

Hello, Tourmie,
Many thanks for your reply.
As you say, the age fits for your suggestion suggestion. Can you tell me, is St Thomas a village (I cannot locate it on my map) or a church in another town or village of Devon?
Regards,
Martyn

Hello, 'Tourmie',
My apologies for the tardiness in responding; I didn't notice your reply until I did a bit of housekeeping!
As you say, Googling St Thomas, Devon, it does pop up in the Exeter area.
Many thanks for your assistance and, again, my apologies.
Regards,
Martyn
