My father gathered a large amount of information regarding our family tree but he developed a brain tumour which meant that he was unable to access data that he had compiled. We didn't want him to stop using the laptop at the time but unfortunately due to his condition most of the data was lost. My father died in 2002 and I am desperate to complete his work but unfortunately most of it is lost as he worked on it during his time of illness. If the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ decide to do a Who am I jo public, please please please contact me. I would like to fulfill my father's dream of completing the family history that was lost due to his illness, it would be in honour of my beautiful loving father.

Good morning npb and welcome to the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ family history forum,

I'm not sure if you realise that this board is purely for the use of members of the public who share a common interest in family history. No one from the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ has input other than regulate it to make sure we all behave ourselves smiley - biggrin

WDYTYA is not made by the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ but a third party production company who you see in the credits for the program... they make most of the world wide ones too!
I doubt very much if they would make a WDYTYA for a member of the ordinary public as it needs to be sold and ensure it draws a sufficient audience to be worthwhile.. hence the use of celebs. I'm pretty sure most of us have some very interesting lines which would make great viewing but other than other FH enthusiasts, who would watch it?

Now back to your sad loss of your father. 2002? thats quite early in terms of online research, not a great deal online back then so I'm assuming he did most of his research in Records Offices and Archives, which would mean he also took notes before transferring the info to his family history program! Did he also get rid of these too? smiley - erm Your father would also have had to obtain BMD certificates, these would have also been hard copy
Do you still have his laptop? Depending on what he did to it, it is possible these days to recover data which has been deleted, hopefully he didn't format his hard drive though.

If you would really like to fulfill your father's dream of completing the family history, why don't you gather what you have and start again. We can help here and advise you along the way smiley - biggrinsmiley - ok

Me! I don't understand why these people all have to be celebrities (and living in New Zealand I haven't actually heard of many of them, so it may as well be ordinary people). I have said lots of times I wish they would do this series with ordinary people, which would be more interesting to me.

It doesn't matter who people are - their stories are interesting. (But I do spend time researching family history for people whose ancestors came from our area, so perhaps you would call me a FH enthusiast. Not really, though. My own family history doesn't get much attention.)

    Cheers, Caro.

Well yes Caro, "we" naturally would all watch as we are interested in Family stories but to make a program appeal to the general viewing populous would probably mean very careful production and research. Can you imagine all the people that would apply (and I suspect that would be many) I suspect it would cost far more money than doing a celeb who has replied to an ad in The Stage and mentioned that a rellie has already done some/most of the work smiley - winkeye Even poor Michael Parkinson and June Whitfield didn't measure up with their stories.

I know of several very interesting family backgrounds, my husbands paternal side being one of them but who would watch an episode that has just about everything thrown in only to end up with a normal jo public at the end of it.

I, and I bet nearly all people, read novels which are about people we don't know till we start the book. Books don't have to be about famous people to be interesting; people just get interested in these imaginary people as they read. I don't see why the stories of real people would be different. (And someone - not me - much watch all those reality programmes on television, which seem to me incredibly boring in their concept. Not sure about their reality as I have barely seen any. Who does want to see people trying to control dreadfully-behved teenagers or grossly obese people trying to lose weight.)

Well, here I am - my first posts (that perhaps isn't absolutely true - may have asked a question here before) and I am being awkward! Sorry.

    Welcome Caro,

If we all read the same books and watch the same tv programs then life would be so dull, but reality programs are what the people want today and celebrity's keep on making a come back on these programs, I did see one or two programs where the family were related to Royalty with ordinary people and I did enjoy it, also Heir Hunters is a good program about ordinary folk and seems to be quite popular, as well as the new Millions program all about ordinary people getting a little break in life and 15 minutes of fame so a WDYTYA program on us ordinary researchers family trees may well work.
    Dont be a stranger here.

If you come back to this board to see the replies then I hope you can give us some information to help you get back your Fathers Family Tree,

Some people deposit their work on line somewhere as there are many places to do this,
What we can do here is to help you start again and then we have ways of checking various places to see if we can find some of those names on line that belong to your family tree.

He may have had questions on a messageboard somewhere about a family member and googling that persons name can bring up a thread that he may have started somewhere.
All is not lost and you can start again and may one day with help find your fathers tree.
Most of us keep paper files of everything we found and at least some links may be found somewhere to your Fathers research.
Don't give up all hope as we may be able to help you

    Edna

    Hi

Are you saying that he had deleted the info from the laptop?

Have you still got the laptop but cannot find the information on it?

I'm afraid the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ doesn't have the trained staff or the resources to follow individuals family trees... If they did they would be inundated with requests. If you want someone else to do the work, you will have to pay someone to do it for you.

The easiest and most rewarding way is to do it yourself, I'm sure your father would have taken great pride in the fact you took up the interest. As mentioned earlier, we are happy to help you along, but you must also put in the work and create the tree.

We have a friend who used to work with computer problems. He showed us a piece of software that could retrieve passwords etc., so a GOOD computer engineer could probabydo the same. It's worth a try.

The 'experts' you see doing genealogy on TV are not employed by the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ, they work independently.
