Hello everyone, I am new here but have been researching my family for some time now. I can get back to George Carsberg, born about 1774 in Islington and we believe his father to be George Nicholas Carsberg born c 1740. All the Carsberg family and descendants were Surgical Instrument Makers. The main puzzle for me at the moment is to get any further back as we can find no information as to how, or from where George Nicholas came to London. Family "rumour" suggests it was from either Sweden or Germany but I don't know how to make any enquiries. Another interesting idea after watching the Len Goodman episode - would they have been Freemen of the City of London in order to carry on their trade in Clerkenwell and Islington, and if so how would I access any records about them? Any help or suggestions very warmly appreciated.

    Thanks, Robin carsberg.

When I was in the same position I used both lists of freemen of the City and apprentice records both proving useful as often the granting of freedom was through patrimony and the apprenticeship records often state father's name and address.

Another avenue to try is wills. The use of all of these took me back a further 100 years to 1633 but this was in Yorkshire. Not sure if or where such records would be for London.

    Hello Robin,

If you G***gle Worshipful Company of Cutlers, there are quite a few on line,
London being one of them, maybe you'll follow this and find some more information.

It sounds odd, but that is the precision part of their trades, bearing in mind I believe Sheffield was on there.

    All the best.

This is a possible death for him but a slight difference in the name spelling so keep it in your records just in case it turns out to be him
