Can anyone help.
Sometime ago I saw a programme on television where mothers who could not look after their children in the 1800's would take them to an institution in London and leave them in their care. Quite often the mother would leave a token for the child, I assume to be given to them when they were old enough.
If the mother did not return the child was then given to a family to be brought up and educated..
Does anyone know the name of this institution, and if there is a website.
Maggie
It was Coram's Foundling Hospital. Apparently the tokens were not given to the children.
'Tatty Coram' in "Little Dorrit" is so called because the family in the book got her from the Foundling Hospital to be a companion/servant to their daughter

Thank you
If you Google Foundling Museum there is quite a lot of information available.
A good start is
If you are looking for a particular family then The London Metropolitan Archives have an information leaflet [no. 33] which you can download

Thank you for the information, I have been on the website today and found it very interesting.
Have decided on a trip to the Metropolitan Archives for further research.
