I have just started my family tree and already I'm seeing potential problems. I have ordered my grandparents birth certificates and although they give you the names of their parents how do you go about finding them? They won't show the dates of birth so is it just a stab in the dark or is there actually something that will narrow down the search a bit? I'm already a member of 1837online.

    Thanks

May I suggest that you do a little reading? There are lots of books out there to help you see the steps that have to be taken. You have taken the first and once you have those certificates you can start to link up with census entries.

If you want to read online, then start with:

    or

    or

If you read those, you will not go too wrong!

Sorry. I've just started (like today) and unfortunately my mind is working overtime with the excitement of unearthing my family's history and I'm really keen for knowledge NOW! I guess I'll just have to be patient and wait till the book shops open tomorrow as I've had a little look online and it's like trying to find a needle in a haystack. Full of information but none of what I want.

You will need to work from the place of birth, if tey were born before April 1901 they should be on the censuses held every 10 years (the 1841-1901 are now available but not are all available online). You can try and find the marriage of your great grandparents but you may find that your grandparents were at the end of the famiy line. Some families moved around quite a lot whilst others did not move about much.

There are so many books and online facilities, but the Family Record Centre in Islington for England and Wales ancestors are good.

Don't forget you can search for dates of birth on FreeBMD, you don't have to pay like you do at 1837online. You can search over a wide time period and at different locations, so you should find your great grandparents births quite easily. Then there is FreeCen for the census returns, not complete yet, but getting there.

The most important thing though is to keep accurate records of all your research, noting down the sources of your information. There's nothing worse that looking at a date you have scribbled down and not remembering how you found it. There are many good genealogical programmes available for your computer and I would recommend that you get one soon. Good luck, but be warned, this hobby is very addictive!
