    Hi everyone

I'm still on my fruitless search for Joseph Bruce, born (apparently) around 1790 in (apparently) Colchester, Essex. Occupation: Druggist and Chemist.

I've used all the online resources at my disposal to find his birth but I can find not a single birth of a child called Bruce in Essex (serious kudos will be transmitted through this site if anyone can do what I can't!)

Now, given that the place of birth is Colchester, which has been a military town for centuries, and that the name is historically of Scottish origin, what do you think are the chances that my Joseph could be the son of a Scottish soldier???

Clutching at straws here, I know, but it's as if this guy never existed as far as BMD information is concerned.

    Thanks a lot

    Michelle

There is a William Bruce in Colchester marrying in 1768 so there are Bruce family in the area, and there was a William Bruce father of the Bride to Susan Bruce around 1793 so possibly had a son too. Do Josephs childrens names give any clue to fathers name as in first born son named after the fathers father.

Non Con records has this burial so could he be a non con, they did not do baptism, just recorded and witnessed the birth if they were Quaker.

all these are just possible suggestions

Have you trawled through all the Colchester parish registers , there are quite a few and you have to turn the pages

google ~~ Essex record office~~select images...search for Colchester parish records, or colchester baptisms. Its time consuming, trawling the actual images page by page

also go to the search for everything and put Bruce into the search, there are pages and pages
