According to ancestry, Henry was baptised on 24 August 1828 in St Ann Blackfriars which is in the City of London (not Middlesex), but according to the 1841 and 1851 censues his father had died by 1841. His mother was born in Bethnal Green in about 1791. I can't see a marriage but I suspect that it has been mis-transcribed.

Anyone who has full access to 1841 census details can confirm his full household's details, but familysearch.org shows him as age 12 and living at that stage in St Ann, Blackfriars, Middlesex with mother Ann and sisters Rebecca and Maria. The following link also lists what look like records of births of sisters Rebecca, Melina, Elizabeth Ann and Mahala. The father is listed as John henry William in some and just Henry in others, mother always listed as Ann.

I wonder if they moved on to NZ? there is an entry for a John Gieseking, hotel keeper, inbound to London from NZ in 1932. His birth is 1895, so too young to be another son of Henry and Catherine. Maybe its his grandson from the wayward Henry jnr

1935 NZ electoral rolls for Westland, west coast
Eileen Georgina Gieseking, Australian Htl, Greymouth, spinster
John Gieseking, Brian Boru Hotel, Greymouth, barman
Kathleen Gieseking Brian Boru Hotel, Greymouth, spinster
William Henry Gieseking, Brian Boru Hotel, Greymouth, hotel keeper

think this must be the runaway Henry William and his children

    1928-1963 electoral rolls
William henry is at the same place on all of them will John Gieseking

    searching the NZ bmds

there is a death for errant wife Catherine Gieseking 71 yrs 1903

    other Gieseking deaths
    Catherine Gieseking no age 1871
    Johanna 27 1895
    John Gieseking 48 1916
    George Francis Gieseking 6 1907

So it looks like William went to NZ and his mother later joined them.

johanna (neeO'Brien) was John Giesekings first wife, he went on to marry Mary Ann Hanrahan in 1896
    off spring
    with Johanna:
    John 1893
    Kathleen Annie 1891
    Florrie 1892
    with Mary Ann:
    Kathleen 1897
    William Henry 1899

to the william Henry and john mentioned earlier are grandsons of Herny Gieseking.

Still don't know what happened to Henry snr... though the indexes are not complete

found some more info after the board closed, but I think I need to recap and put it all in some kind of chronological order.
    to recap

Henry Gieseking arrives in Adelaide January 1849,
sister Rebecca also appears in Adelaide 1849, giving birth to twin daughters on 12 Feb
Rebbecca dies 26 Jun, age 4 mths, and Harriet. Father is listed as Robert Baker but I can't see a marriage
for them and nothing else in Australia....

He married Catherine Hannand in 1852 Victoria (see variations on the spelling of her and his name!)

they have at least the following children in the state of Victoria
    Henry William 1853 -
    Amelia 1857 - 1857
    Edward 1855 - 1856
    Mary 1856 - 1856
    Alfred 1861 - 1861
    Mary 1876 -

There is another son John and daughter Catherine, not sure where where they were born though

At some point before 1870 they travel on to New Zealand and Settle in Greymouth, which is on the West coast of South Island.
1870, Henry is posting notices to locals not to give eldest son Henry William credit in his name, thats the last we see of son Henry William.
1874 His wife, catherine,is running up debts and he posts another notice in the paper about not giving her credit.
Henry at this point is a storekeeper. Maybe thats when she returns to Victoria and has baby Mary in 1876
    Catherine does return though...

Henry dies is Greymouth 5 Jan 1887 age 57 (see orbit and funeral notice in the Grey River Argus newspaper)
Catherine dies 1903 age 71 giving her a birth date of abt 1834

    Son John marries twice
    1. Johanna P'Brien (1866-1895)
    ....John 1893 -
    ....Kathleen Annie 1891
    ....Florrie 1892
    2. Mary Ann Hanrahan they marry in 1896
    ....Kathleen 1897
    ....William Henry 1889

another birth for a George Francis Gieseking (1901 - 1907), not sure if he is John's son or William Henry's.

next on the electoral rolls for Westland, West Coast NZ
1896 John Gieseking is a publican in Greymouth, living with Catherine Gieseking (mother I think)
1900 John is still a publican in Greymouth, livind with 2nd wife Mary Ann and mother Catherine
1905-6 John is still a Publican in Greymouth with wife Mary Ann
    1911 same as above
1914 John is still a publican with Mary ann, they are joined by son John jnr who is a clerk at the Post Office Hotel

John stands for Councillor in 1903 but didn't get enough vots (Grey River Argus newspaper)
Son John dies is 1916, so the next entries must be for the grandson John

1919 John Giesking, Farmer living at Kopara
1919 Kathleen Gieseking 77 Tainui St Greymout, spinster

    Electoral rolls Christchurch, Canterbury NZ
1928 John Gieseking 82 Warrington Street, Barman
    electoral rolls Canterbury, MID CANTERBURY!
    1928
John Giesking, Leeston, barman - possibly the same John had moved by the time the 2 electoral rolls occured

Electoral Rolls for Greymouth, Westland, Westcoast NZ
1928 William Henry Gieseking, Australasian Htl, Greymouth hotel keeper WEST COAST
1928 Eileen Georgina Gieseking Australasian Htl, Greymouth, spinster WEST COAST
1935 John Gieseking at the Brian Boru Hotel, barman along with his sisters Kathleen and Eileen Georgina and son William Henry who is
the Brian Boru hotel keeper WEST COAST
1938 John is still at the Brian Boru Hotel as barman along with Kathleen and Eileen Georgina, both spinsters, again son William Henry is hotelkeeper WEST COAST
1946 William Henry Gieseking is Hotel Keeper, Lombard Street, Greymouth WEST COAST
1946 John Gieseking 57 Mackay Street, Greymouth barman WEST COAST
1949 as above for both William and John WEST COAST
1954 john Gieseking, Revingtons Hotel Greymouth, retired WEST COAST
1954 Kathleen Gieseking 19 Ligar pl, Cl, spinster AUCKLAND
1957 John Gieseking 47 Chapel street, Greymouth retired WEST COAST
1969 John Gieseking 72 Reid Street, Greymouth, pensioner WEST COAST
1978 John Gieseking Dixon house Greymouth, rtired WEST COAST
    1981 same for John Gieseking

not sure who Irene married, but giving it to you anyway!
1972 Irene Alice Gieseking, Aniseed valley Hope, NELSON, widow
    listed 4 tmes in 1978?
1978 Irene Alice Giesking Birchfield, housewife WEST COAST

1978 Irene Alice Gieseking Martin Valley, Muchison married TASMAN
1978 Irene Alice Gieseking Aniseed Valley Hope, WIDOW TASMAN

meanwhile William Henry appears to have moved to Onlsow, Wellington

    1954-63 11 Guildford tce, clerk
that's the last entry.... doesn't appear to have married?

1949 Kathleen Gieseking 19 Ligar pl, Cl, spinster AUCKLAND
1954 Kathleen Gieseking 19 Ligar pl, Cl, spinster AUCKLAND

    it wasn't that difficult Edna,
Firstly, the name is extremely uncommon, which helps, I have also just re-subscribed to Ancestry worldwide for a month to fill some gaps now there is more on there for Australia and NZ... so knew what was there, that lead me to NZ.

The rest was curtesey of google smiley - biggrin what would we do without it eh?

the biggest thing missing is the passenger lists between Australia and NZ, many of them are not searchable and I'm not going to trawl through them.
