    Hi there

Does anyone know if there is a register / trade directory for chemists / druggists from the 19th century? I have one in my tree and I'm finding it very difficult to find out anything about him (except what I can find in censuses and from his death cert).

    Thanks a lot

    Michelle

They would be in the normal trade directories but in alphabetical order take a look at Historical Directories to see if he is listed

also try searching newspapers archives, sometimes they were listed once they had passed their exams etc

oops... just remembered, have you looked for a Will on the probate calendars? my Alchemists both left wills

If you post a name and year of death I'm sure someone will check Ancestry for you if you don't have access

Also check the Wellcome library for its medical holdings, slim chance there may be something, especially if he discovered a new drug or something!

    Hi there

Thanks a lot for these links - I'll check them out.

This is for a tricky (ish) branch of my tree. The person in question is Joseph Bruce born around 1791 in Colchester, Essex (this according to the 1851 census). Married Hannah somebody - when and where I don't know. At least 5 of their children were baptised in Bishops Stortford (I found their info in the non-conformist registers for Bishops Stortford)

1841 Census (Registration District: Bishops Stortford, Hertfordshire)

    BRUCE, Joseph M 50 1791 (occupation: druggist)
    BRUCE, Hannah F 50 1791
    BRUCE, Elizabeth F 15 1826 Hertfordshire
    BRUCE, William M 12 1829 Hertfordshire

1851 Census (Registration District: Samford County: Suffolk)

BRUCE, Joseph Head Married M 60 1791 Chemist & Druggist Colchester
    Essex
BRUCE, Hannah Wife Married F 61 1790 Aldham Essex

    1861 Census (RG number: RG09 Piece: 1159 Folio: 40 Page: 41)

BRUCE, Joseph Head Married M 71 1790 Retired Druggist
    Colchester Essex
BRUCE, Hannah Wife Married F 71 1790 Retired Druggist Wife
    Aldham Essex

He died on 24/01/1862 in Tattingstone Union, Samford Suffolk.

I can find no record at all of a Joseph Bruce being born around that time in Essex and can't find a marriage either - it could have been in Essex, Bishops Stortford or East Bergholt.

    Regards

    Michelle
