My great-grandfather James Murphy born 16th August 1890 Ballywalter Northern ireland immigrated to New York in 1913, he then moved to Chicago and in 1917 is recorded to be working in Los Angeles as a Baker at Bishop & Co in Los Angeles California. The address of his employment was 7TH & ALVARADO ST, LA. His wife was Mary Bryce Murphy back home in Ireland but he never returned to Ireland and married some one called Kathy.
Any help on finding him would be very welcome. I hoped to follow up on his employment records and see if they and any more information on him since he said he was married to Kathy which would make him a bigamist.

There is a James Murphy marriage 1909 to a Mary - and a Mary Bryce marriage 1909 to a James - both County Down.

You need to pay for access to get more of the records. It may not be them, but it may be worth a try.
Someone else may be able to get you more information.

Thanks yes this is James but rumour has it he moved to New York before he died. I just can't find his wedding to Kathy or the birth record of Irene! Perhaps they were married in Atkinson Illinois since when he immigrated in 1913 he said he was going to work there. And how did he go from working in a bakery to being a cement contractor! Did he ever become American or could he not because he had two wives?

if you look at the image of 1930 census, it states he was 26 when first married... which would indicate a 1916 marriage?

I'm not totally convinced they are the same James Murphy, as the imigration year is well out in the 1930 census

My great-grandfather left behind three children including my grandfather Charles Murphy. He stopped all contact with them I think when he arrived in California. James is the baker and is in the 1920 census records but I'm not sure myself about the 1930 one yet whats to stop him from making up dates when he lied about having another wife in Ireland. To become American would they not have enquired about his immigration records since he put down Mary as his wife and that would lead them to him being a bigamist. Could he have jumped states to avoid this?
He might have lied about being married to kathy unless they married in Chicago when he worked on an orange farm.
He was the jack of all trades I'll give him that!.
Rachel.
