Welcome to the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Family Trees message board.
First let me explain the following.
Although this message board is hosted by the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ none of the members are employed by the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ.
We are all family history enthusiasts who use our knowledge and experience to help other members in their quest to discover their own family history.
As a new member your first 20ish posts will be pre moderated. This means they won't show up straight away so don't worry if you press the Post Message button and nothing happens, your message will show up, how long it takes – could be a few minutes could be a few hours, depends on how busy the mods are.
If you are a complete beginner then the golden rule is to start with yourself and work backwards. Your own birth certificate, your parents marriage certificate, their birth certificates etc.
Your first port of call should be the box on the left hand side of this page headed Practical History. If you click on Family History it brings up this page,
www.bbc.co.uk/family...
There are sections on there for you to read.
One big no no as stated in the message on the right hand side of this page is that you can't give information on living people.
We can point you in the right direction of how to find information on living people but it can't be put on the board.
We have members worldwide and if the British based ones can't find what you are looking for their help can be invaluable.
We also like breaking down brickwalls. We will take on any challenge, wether we can break down that brickwall is another matter but we do try.
Some information is freely available online other information comes from sites which charge, most of us have access to the most popular sites but occasionally we have to say you will have to pay and find the information yourself.
We have a useful websites thread which gives you details of many places online where you can find information.
So jump in and ask away, because you will be in moderation give us as much information in your first post as you can to save us having to keep asking for more.
If you want to build your post total up quickly then go to our bar thread and post away, anything will do on that thread it is where we can chat and discuss topics not related to family history.
Oh and finally family history research is addictive, you have been warned.
Enjoy your time with us, it can be quite an experience....
NB Please note you will NOT be emailed when someone replies to your question. Keep checking the board for answers

Plus ----- Sometimes your posts will slip down the page, even if you have an answer. To see if you have had any answers since your last post, click on the "my discussions" tab on the left of this board.

No question is a silly question as we have all be there and asked them all so if you dont ask you wont find out.
Each message posted by you is called a thread so try to stick to the same thread if possible for the same family name which saves researchers going over old ground and can see what has already been found for you.
The start of a thread is on the left so click that and you will see the beginning of the thread, to see the latest message in the thread click the right side which gives the time of the last message posted.
You can search the board for a name to see if it comes up but only the posts in the last year will show up as this search facility is newly added.
Enjoy the hunt.
Edna

If you are looking for advice then dates and places can be helpful, but bear in mind that if people are likely to still be alive we are unable to help becauise of data protection, see the Data Protection Act notice.
Family history can be addictive, frustrating and very enjoyable but be prepared for it to take time, don't assume it is like on tv!.

I have just registered. I have 107 members in my family tree but I am now stuck. It doesnt help when my G Grandads were Jones on my fathers side and Owen on my mothers side. However on my paternal G grandmothers side I have the name Blakemore and on my maternal G Grandmothers side I have the name White. On the White side I have traced back to 1836 Mathew White born in Ireland possibly Dublin married to a Margaret. On the Blakemore side I have John Blakemore born in Basford Derby Derbyshire Nottingham in 1841 but therafter in Crewe Cheshirwe. He must have been married twice, second marriage to Margaret McKeon borm 1853.. Unable to trace first marriage.
The rest of the Blakemore side all seem to have been born in Nantwich Cheshire. The Jones side are from Baguley Cheshire. On the Owen side my G Grandfather was Owen but I was told that either the name Owen was an adopted name or the family fell out and the family name was changed and should have been Catherall from Cheshire. Has anyone any ideas how I can carry on . There is no one left in my family who knows anything.

Hi Katy
From today's Friday Quiz thread on HH I see you are back from your holiday. Hope it was a good one.
Could you please pin this thread (or maybe an edited version to remove all the "bumps" etc) to the top of this board.
Many thanks
