I know that the surname Blake is VERY common in England and Scotland, but I was wondering in which of those places it actually originated? Was it a Scottish name that came to England or and English name that wound up in Scotland? I know that there are also Blakes in Ireland but they are not ethnically Irish, they were from England.
all replies are much appreciated
Public Profiler gbnames gives a map of the name in 1881 of where it is mostly populated.
search for ancestors gives the Irish take on it

Hi, My family tree has blakes, in fact my grandmother was a blake, but my line is from devon, is it family lines you are looking for?
I don't know a whole lot about my family, but the Blake that is in mine is my great-grandfather George Herbert Blake (I know, ridiculously English name, ha). I'll be recieving more family info later this week in a packet from my aunt, so I'll let you know if they're from Devon or what.
thanks!
Have you had a look on freebmd as there are a few George Herbert Blake.

Blake were orignially from Normandy France there family name was deCaddell later change to Caddell. And a guy by the name of Richard Black Caddell dropped the Caddell part, and mispelled Black as Blake and all decendants English, Scottish & Irish are decendants of this Caddell
