Hiya Guuys,
My great grandad died in Ecuador, we think in 1944. as thats what his wifes war Friendly alien record says. However i cannot get the death certifcate. I have tried writing to the ecuadorian civil registry but my pigeon spanish does not work. As i do not have the exact day of death the british embassy in ecuador wont help, it also does not help that he was probably either chilen or german at the time. I am lost confused and dazed. I dont wont to pay for a flight to ecucador to find it. Any one got any clues?
Cheers now
David

Have you tried writing to the Ecuadorian Embassy in London for help?

Bill
Have you contacted an Anglo-German Family History Society?, as they may be able to help or advice. Possibly The National Archives, Kew, may have some general records of that time and may possibly mention your ancestor and an event at the time.
I think your route may be through the US Ecuadorian Embassy.

Cheers guys, having no luck really no reply from any of them.......
I dont want to loose more hair over this arggh
Hi Grumpybazzer,
If your great grandad died whilst on active service the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (there is a web sit) maybe able to help.
Regards
Spike
He was working for oil companies. My difficulties is that i dont knwo the exact date of his death. Chilean embassy wont help, the ecuador embassy wont help. the british emabssy wont help. I have tried to civil registry and they wont help. I know he is there. I have letters from him in 1944 saying he was heading that way. The only paper work i have is his birth certificate. saying he was german his wedding certificate says he was german. However was he still german 20 years later??? Germnay wont help chile nor ecuador will help me. Arghhhh This is why i am grumpy!!!!
Hi Grumpy,
Is it worth contacting the international oil companies via their web sites? and see if they would check their records.
Also a german working for oil companies in South America during the second world war does raise the question instinct in me re the reaction or lack of it from the various governments.
Do you think it is worth putting the details of what you have, dates of birth, marriage, place of death etc., on the message board and see what reaction you get?
Regards
Spike
Spike
Hiya Spike,
His Name was Rudolf Goldburn. Orignaly Goldbaum was born on January 10th 1890 in Pforzheim Germany was married in a civil wedding the Hotel Royal in Chanaral Chile to Regina Reginato on the 17th January 1917.
He worked in the El Teneinte Mine in Sewell until the 1920's then the nitrate mines in the atacalma by the 30's he was with the Goldmines of Venzulea then a stint with Veneulean governement ( still no record of him there either) but thats where he says he is working in his letters home, then a little stint in Columbia then Nothing but a note to say he is in ecuador!
All the companies he did work for are closed. Even El teniente say he never worked for them but my granddad was born there!
My great grandad seems like he wants to dissapear. There is no offical paperwork here in the UK for him from 1917 when he got married
Some of my relatives think he was some sort of spy- he spoke 5 fluent languages, some think he was killed in ecuador by the Nazi's in south america because he was Jewish by birth. He is a enigma wrapped up in a mystery clothed by a question mark!
All the other family are easy.
Guys if you can help please do
One very grumpy Bazzer
Hi Grumpy,
Certainly has the ingrediants for a good yarn. As you say if he wanted to disappear with 5 languages not a problem or if he was murderd it look likes a dead end, if you excuse the pun.
Could he have returned to Germany or do you know if he had any children?
There is a lot of web sites relating to the El Teneinte Mine in Sewell which might be worth ploughing through on a wet and windy week end.
Regards
Spike

Hiya Spike,
Yep been there done that Emailed and conversed with El teniente mine and the have no record of him for some reason. I think they get confused with great grandad and grandad and have got the wrong gerneration.
Any way...
I perosnaly dont think he as murdered or any htinkg like that, those theory's developed because no one in the family will talk about him. even his children, my grandad last saw him in when he was 10!
He was a bit of a playboy so the stories go so there is probably another family somewhere in south america. However how i would ever find which of the 4 countries he lived in he may have sown his seed would need a life time to find out. All i need is death certificate and i could put him to bed as such. I know it exists becuase my grandad got one in the 50's but my great grandmother threw it out as she did not believe he had died!
My grandad worked in ecuador in the 50's but is unwilling to help me!
Arghhhh
Bazzer
