  Hello
  i am at the very first stage of finding out about my parents i have been down to the reords office and found marriage and birth dates on screen do i need to purchase copies of their certificates or is there anywhere i can go to view them?

  You will need to purchase the certificates for the births as there is no where you can view them. With the marriage certificate you could save purchasing the certificate if the marriage was in church and the registers have been deposited in the Local Record Office. However, this will also depend on you having an idea of which church your parents were married in.

  Only Scotland has the records online up to 100 years ago for births, 75 years ago for marriages and 50 years for births. If you know where your ancestors lived for a period and it is a small area, preferably with one church, the local record office might have the baptisms (not everyone baptised their children) as well as the marriage certificas and burial records.
