Hi snuckle, You could subscribe to 1837 online or ancestry.co.uk but this would not necesarily give his age at marriage ie 'over 21' or 'full age'I am not sure when it became normal practice to put in the age. Another site is freebmd. Or you could put up on the board what you have, full name, dates and places etc., with regards to your grand father and maybe some kind soul may be able to help.

Hello spike many thanks for your reply and i will give both them sites a try, i do have another problem i am parranoid about giving my card details on here so i need another way of subscribing to any sites, i have heard there is a way of buying vouchers from somewhere to pay and view details i don,t want to buy any certs i just want to view details and hopefully move on, i have bought a copy of my fathers birth cert. hoping that my grandfathers full details were on there, but the problem i have is his age is not recorded and when i try to judge his age and try to guess where he was born there is far too many men of the same name to make sure i have the right man. But thank you very much and i will try the sites you told me.
    regards snuckle

    Hi

The General Register Office web site:

Details how certificates can be obtained via telephone or by post. If you provide your grandfather's name I can provide the reference for his marriage in 1934. From his marriage certificate you will have, hopefully, his age and his father's name.

    Regards
    Bill

    Hi Snuckle

I have just checked the GRO marriage index and cannot find William's marriage in 1934. I even checked 1933 and 1935.

However, I checked for a death and came across the following:

William Robert Ling Aug 1989 Camden Greater London born 10 Nov 1912

    And then found a birth:
    Ling William R Mar 1913 Pancras 1b 134 mother's maiden name Robertson

There is no birth in the Dec quarter (Oct-Dec) 1912. But entries relate to when the birth was registered so a child born Nov 1912 could have been registered in Jan 1913.

Hello Bill thanks for your research mate but you have stumbled on the problem i have, the william r ling born 10/11/12 and died 1989 is my father, it came to pass that my grand parents actually had 7 children, and i have been told by a relative that william and annie got married in 1934.I have tried to guess grandfathers birth year but so many lings come up for ling that it,s impossible to pinpoint which one,my fathers birth cert, which i bought from the registrar show grandfather and grandmother but no age for them except his occupation as a fishmongers porter. If you say there is no marriage in 1934/35 for william and annie i have a feeling i have fell at the first hurdle mate,i shall have to persue another line of enquiry, but many thanks for your help,if you do come across any more info i would really appreciate, it cos i don,t really want to give up mate.
    Regards snuckle(mick)

    Hi Mick

So what your saying is that you have been led to believe your grandparents married around 1934 but your father was born in 1912? It's not unknown for a marriage to happen some time after the birth of a couple's children (I have made comment on this message board that my gt gt grandparents who were both born around 1829 never married until 1893 after the birth of their 12 children!). However, it may be worth searching before 1912 for your grandparents marriage. Alternatively, do you know when your your grandfather died as this will give his age and you can work back from this.

By the way I came across the following while searching the births between 1900 and 1920.

    Ling James F Pancras.1b 83 Birth 2 1914 mother's maiden name Robertson

    Ling Annie R Pancras.1b 126 Birth 2 1917 mother's maiden name Robertson

    Ling Florence C Pancras.1b 158 Birth 3 1919 mother's maiden name Robertson

    Regards

    Bill

Hello Bill, yes mate i was led to believe it was 1934, i,m beginning to wonder if infact they got married at all,as for grandfathers death year i really don,t know. The story i was told that father was so discusted when he saw the ( so called marriage cert was in 1934) that he vowed never to speak or see them again, and he never did, hence the lack of any details i have of them.
So i would doubt very much if there was a marriage it would be pre.1912 if there was i would gamble it would be about 1930 onward. i am going to make contact with my sister to see if she can help piece the mistery together with me.
But again thanks bill for your help mate, and if i do get more info i,ll let you know mate.
    Best wishes mick

    Hi snuckles,
The name LING is English from East Anglia: habitation name from LYNG in Norfolk, which Ekwall suggests may be derived fom Old English HLINC hillside.
    Trust this helps.

Hello bill hope your still there mate, i have spoke to my sister and she agrees there a strong possibillity they never got married at all. The other names you posted are my fathers brother an 2 sisters, i think my only way of getting more info is through these people so somehow or other i will have to try to contact them or any descendants of theirs. there is a thought thats running through my mind as a chance they may have married but that could be from the 1920s through to the 30s. A nd grandfathers death date is only an hunch at around late 40s to early 50s.
    any way many thanks mate.
    Best wishes mick

    Hi Mick

Just to be sure checked 1900-1912 and there is no marriage for William Robert Ling and Annie Robertson. A William Ling married in June 1906 in Pancras but this does not cross check with a marriage of an Annie Robertson.

I think the only way you're going to crack this is if you can find your grandfather's death and from that his age. Do you know where your grandfather was living?

    Regards

    Bill
