Hello all,
The Data Protection Act restricts any discussion on these boards of the personal details of living persons.
As a rule of thumb if you are researching family members who were born within the last 100 years and do not have a confirmed date of death for them please refrain from posting any information about that person.
If you wish to enquire about how to trace living relatives you can seek general tips and advice but please do not reveal names, addresses etc of anyone you think may be alive.
Many thanks
Andrew
Andrew, this was better when it always appeared on the right of the board! In this form, it will just drop down the page and be lost. Then we shall be back to constantly explaining that we can't discuss living people.
Raunds ,
I believe this is one of the messages that are 'stickies' ie the beeb will make it so it won't drop down ............ all part of the new look on here ,
Thatt is what the drawing pin picture means on andrew's post.
It is stuck at the top.
Yes, but when I posted my message, the DPA warning was halfway down the page with no sign of a map pin!
Hmm !! I see someone removed the pin !!! .......
No pin for me either.
I've got a pin, but I do think it should be more prominate, after a while it will surely slip down the page of messages. Can we not go back to the old style of having the notice on one side of the page?.
How bizarre, 2 minutes ago this message was half way down the board but now it has a pin stuck in it again. Spooky goings on here me thinks
ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ
Is there anybody thereeeeeeeeeee if there is can you curl my alphabetic ouija board for me.
Edna
for gawd sake someone go out and buy some superglue!
I think this just about sums up the level of competence of the people who have been tinkering with the boards!
where it describes the forum at the top
"share tips and ...
THAT is where the DPA warning should appear
So it reads
Share tips and advice for kick starting your family history research.
Remember that due to the Data Protection Act- you must not discuss the details of living persons.
Then no need for superglue, blu-tac, bobby pins, thumbtacks, drawing pins, darts, tent pegs, pins, corkscrews, nails, screws, sellotape, magnets.
Simples!
I shall now get back to my work as a rocket scientist.
since im still alive ...-i think,... does that mean i cant post my facebook page?
This messageboard is also viewable by Search Engines such as google and may show up your own personal details that you post here too, your username, as well as details of your ancestors.
If someone is searching for Mary Jones born 1863 Cardiff Wales, and your ancestor happens to share that name that you posted on this board then the other person will find you here, which has been happening a lot of late.

Hi All,
The pin fell off this message, so am just popping it back up.....
If you are new to the board and post a query, do remember to check later to see if anyone has answered. You will NOT get an email notification of a reply
Do allow a bit of time, we are all amateurs at home with our computers, so we have to go shopping or feed the family occasionally and some people have to work as well. There is no 'team of Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ experts' on this board
And, if your question is answered, please, PLEASE let us know . It's simple, just click on 'Reply to this message' below the last reply to your question.
It is so disheartening when people spend time and effort answering a question and the original poster doesn't bother to check for replies.
Finally, when you are new, your first messages are read by the moderators before they appear, so it can be several hours (especially at weekends) until your message can be seen. This is quite normal and does not mean you have done something wrong, so no need to post the message again.
The History message boards are now closed. They remain visible as a matter of record but the opportunity to add new comments or open new threads is no longer available. Thank you all for your valued contributions over many years.
