    Hello,

I am looking for my ancestors in England. One of my greatgrandfather's married a British woman. My greatgrandfather was Adriaan van der Vliet. He was born in Rotterdam 27-02-1799(The Netherlands) and died 01-01-1843 in Harlingen (The Netherlands). His profession was cargadoor (in Dutch). He married on 22 december 1806 in Bedminster (England) with Jane Frances Grant. She was born around 1788 in Bristol and died 23-11-1823 in Harlingen (The Netherlands). WHo can tell me more about her and het ancestors.

Welcome to the message board, as a new member your first 20 posts will be moderated, that means they won't show up straight away.
Don't worry they wiull show up eventually.

I don't know what you know about English records but civil registartion of birts, marriages and deaths didn't start until 1837.

That means before that we have to rely on church records some of which are online and some are not.

What I have found is this.

On first impression I would have thought Grant a fairly rare surname in Somerset. It is traditionally a Scottish surname.

But Bristol being a port, her ancestors could easily have migrated from Scotland.

The IGI has very few Bristol area parishes transcribed.

Bedminster parish transcripts are held at the Somerset archives

..but are closed for relocation till the end of the month.
Unless someone can go visit them on your behalf, I would suggest you write to them to ask if they can check the parish records for Bedminster to see if she was baptised in that parish.

    Sander,
There is a Will in 1875, I wondered if there was some connection to your family.

John Van Der Vliet 14 December 1875.
Administration of the effects of John Van Der Vliet late of Amsterdam in Holland Iron Merchant a bachelor who died 6 June 1875 at Amsterdam was granted at the Principal Registry under the usual limitations to Henry Jeffries of the Ynis near Cardiff in the County of Glamorgan Esquire the lawful Attorney of Cornelius David Van Der Vliet the brother and one of the Next of Kin now residing at Amsterdam.
Cardiff is very near Bristol, and the two brothers have very English/Welsh first names.

I found some more information about the father of Adriaan van der Vliet. It is also an Andriaan. He lived some years in Stabroek (Demerary) and also died there. The town Stabroek is now Georgetown in Britsh Guyana. His profession was harbour master. Mabey he met the family Joseph Grant over there.
