    Hi all,
I am desperately looking for a female family member who left africa in 1955-56, she was a nurse, arrived in the UK at 1958, she is nowhere to be found, I just want to make sure that she exists, if so, that she is OK. She is my grandmother and should be in her 70's now. Someone suggested to look for her at nursesrecennect.com, and nothing. Anyone? please help!!!

The Department for Work and Pensions have a letter forwarding service. It is based at their offices in Tyne & Wear. I cannot find the contact details as I last used them five years ago and am in the middle of a house move!

Anyway when you pay your National Insurance Stamps and then collect your Pension/Benefits the Benefits Agency keep a record of where you are living. You have to write into them explaining why you want to trace the person and also provide as much information as you have about the person ie. name, date of birth, place of employment etc. They will then perform a search and confirm if they can identify the person from the information provided.

The one thing that they will not do is to dislose the address. They will offer to forward a letter for you. In the worse case scenario they will confirm if your grandmother has died.

I used this service in 1993 to trace a Great Aunt that we had lost touch with in 1965. In my case they were able to confirm that she had died in 1988.

Another option could be to contact the governing body for UK nurses. I think it has recently changed its name. It was definitely called the United Kingdom Central Council for Nursing or something similar. All nurses have to be registered with this organisation in order to practice. If you do not have one of their numbers you cannot work legally in the UK as a nurse. You could try writing to them. (If by chance she was a Midwife then they have a distinct organisation called the Royal College of Midwives).

Alternatively you could try the Salvation Army tracing service. I hope this helps.
