I have found two branches of extended family on the web and would like to join up with them. My problem is that i have a free Gedcom from one of the mags but do not know how to use it could some kind person tell me how to use it and how to send the info. Thank You. Trevor

    Hi Trevor

Which Gedcom program do you have? There are many out there and some are simpler to use than others? I use Legacy and find that really easy to construct your family tree on. I also construct an online family tree at Genes Reunited UK which costs a very small annual fee but it does give you access to email others who are constructing trees and have possible matches with people on your tree. In just one year my very small family tree has grown from around 300 to nearly 3,000. I have made contact with a number of extended family I knew nothing about and have acquired a huge insight to the lives of my ancestors.

Best of luck with your research

Hi Which genealogy programme do you use? All of them have GEDCOM - usually go to File on top left of your screen-scroll down to GEDCOM or export or the import. Click on that and follow the instructions- it is quite easy once you get the hang of it.But make sure that you have your programme sitting open first (before going to file) at the person you want as the start of the gedcom file.e.g. Bill bloggs born 1500 - and follow the instructions. You will be asked where you want the file saved- I usually put it into My DOcuments. I check that I have made the right file by making a new family file and importing the gedcom into it.Go to File- Import-then once again follow directions-you will be asked where it is or just need to click on it in the My Documents. Hope this helps a little. Also go to the Help button of your programme and read up there on gedcoms.- Cheers smiley - smiley
