Im just getting back into searching my family history after a very long break.
Infact it was the lack of finding the Jacksons in Bolton that left me in dispair.
Anyway I've noticed that alot of Family History Search Engines now have the 1901 census etc.
Ancestry Web Page looks like a good start but it's a yearly cost. At this point I start to get nervous as this could work out expensive. Can anyone tell me if you have to then pay extra once you are in as a paid member For census search for example? There are so many web pages now I don't know what's for the best.
Is it a worth while investment? & Have people had good results?
I've got to get further on these Jacksons it's driving me nuts.

Hi, I find the ancestry site is good value for money, but if you don't think you will use it enough to offset the cost, why not do what a lot of others do on this site and ask for a look up, just give the details of the person you are looking for and I'm sure you will get a great response, best wishes, Jean

I too find Ancestry extremely good value for money. I have full access to all the censuses from 1851-1901 (transcriptions and original images), plus birth, marriage and death records and much more. There is nothing else to pay at all - the more I look up, the cheaper it is! There is a 14 day free trial - you could give it a whirl and drop it if you don't like it. My ancestors all come from Devon, so to go to the local Records Office would mean a 200 mile round trip - with all the expense and time involved in that, I've saved a fortune on Ancestry which I can access whenever I like.

There are free resources, like FreeBMD which has a lot of births, marriages and deaths between 1837 and 1911, and the Mormon site FamilySearch which has the whole of the 1881 census as well as transcriptions of Parish Registers for BMD before and after 1837. If your anncestors are all from a particular area, it's worth seeing if there is a local family history group or a Rootsweb mailing list - the Devon one is brilliant.

You can search the 1901 census on TNA's web site. It is possible to buy vouchers for as little as Β£5 to view either a transcription of an entry (fifty pence per image) or for the whole census page on which the name you are looking for appears on (seventy five pence per image.) You can download the images so they are yours forever!

Alternatively you can pay online but the minimum charge is Β£5, so it is best to have a whole set of images etc listed from searches so that you do not waste a penny.

Although Ancestry appears expensive at around Β£70 for a years subscription, when you consider what is available for that sum it offers good value. I would spend far more money on visits to record offices in a couple of months. You can also pay just Β£6.99 for pay to view up to 20 images over a 7 day period.

There is little investment needed therefore! Rather than asking others for look ups you can do it yourself in a variety of ways for a very small sum and have the added advantage of discovering those relations for yourself.

In my view, I would suggest the 1901 census transcriptions at The National Archives, Kew/Family Records Centre, Islington, but do check them against the originals.

If you are looking in just one area then some of the census entries have been transcribed by the local family history society. The fact remains that family history does cost money and that the level of transcription is very important, I have found 1837online for 1861 (almost complete) is good.

I have used the Ancestry site on a free trial basis. They take your credit card details at the outset and make you aware that the cancellation is your responsibility. If you do not cancel, and I assume that it is the same with using the service on a fully paid up basis, then they will charge the full amount to you. For example, if you subscribe for a year, then at the end of that year, if you do not cancel, they will charge for another year.
It is particularly useful as a search across all censuses from 1861 to 1901 (inc Wales). The exact search function allows you to enter a name 'Joe Bloggs' and then displays the total number of these names against each census i.e. 1861 - 20, 1871 - 32, 1881 24 etc. The list can then be reduced by adding some details, for example year of birth plus/minus a number of years. For example, you can search for all 'Joe Bloggs', born 1870 +/- 5 years. You could add place of birth or residence. It's a very interesting tool and, if lucky, you can gather a number of generations in one evening. I managed 5 generations including siblings, from one name in one evening on one particular search.
Don't forget that access to the 1881C is free on Ancestry and the National Archives. You can't see the census record, though.

I took the plunge for Ancestry & you're right appart from being addictive I've managed to find a family that quite frankly I gave up on.
Im still trying to work my away around the site which may take more than 14 days
I think at the moment it's paid for itself as it's saved me a 4 hr trip up north again. So I might sign on for the yr & see how it goes.
But you've given me an idea I'll see how it goes & Im going to a msg in my phone so that an alarm goes off in 10 months then it gives me time to canx before they charge me for the nxt yr auto..
Thanx for taking the time to ready & reply. Good Luck on your search. I'd like to say it's all fun but it has a habit of driving you nuts at the same time.
    Thanx again.
    Jo.

Ancestry DO send email reminders before they take the next payment from your card. So far, I have not seen a need to cancel!

I started with a quarterly subscription with Ancestry, which I have changed to annual, as I am still using it 10 months after I started. I have added a probable 600 members to my family tree in this period, all using Ancestry. If you supplement it with FreeBMD, LDS sites, and 1837 (subscription), I think you'll find the investment worthwhile. I certainly have.

My 90 year old great uncle who spent most of his active life in Africa, has been very pleased with the information I have found out about his branch of the family tree.

Word of warning, the email they send confirms the payment has been taken already.

    Hi

You mention the 1851 census. I thought I had complete access but I cannot find 1851, mine starts at 1861.

    Any ideas?
