I got mine from E-bay purchased from Canada and it is fine.
I am slightly disgruntled that I have bought other VERY expensive census years from a much bigger company only to find the regulations of what it is and is not possible to use them for make it hard to believe that good money has been exchanged for them. To the point that liberty looks like going down the plughole!!
This is really something to watch out for. What do othe people think?

I understand that Ancestry are working on transcription at present. They already have a sample online.
Record offices usually have decent microfilm copies of the stuff for their area, with some sort of index for the more populated districts. The indices were done by researchers (usually volunteers) trying to get MOST of the job done, so rural areas are less likely to be included. They usually consist of a reference from surname to enumeration district and folio number.

It depends upon how you want it, how much you are prepared to pay, which county (ies) you want and how often you are likely to use it.

For occasional use, Ancestry will shortly have the 1851 for the whole of the UK available. You can but small blocks of credits to use or you can subscribe to Ancestry.

Otherwise most counties are now available with various commercial organisations such as Archive CD Books, Gordon Beavington, S&N, Stepping Stones and so on and also a few FHS's have transcription CD's available and also fiche. A good google will reveal all the different sites online that offer such a service. Prices vary from Β£15 to Β£80 and more so you do need to shop around. It's quite an investment. Ask for recommendations too as the quality of the scans vary from company to company.

Another cheap way is to find the part of the census you want from the LDS familysearch catalogue and then order the fiche for just a few pounds. They will then send it to the local LDS centre and it will be available for 28 days at a minimal cost.

There is of course TNA and the FRC in London too and many local archives have some census available free of charge.

I find that going through old registers are part of research and I don't object to online indexes and/or images but I couldn't ask someone to do the work for me without doing some research look-up for them in return.

Family history should be something that takes time, otherwise you can miss something important, indexes are only as good as the indexers. The bottom line is that research costs money and time and visiting places where your ancestors lived is all part of the experience. If we relied on indexes then the record offices might be shut due to lack of researchers.

I only request look-ups when I am truly stuck and feel a second pair of eyes may be of benefit. I usually exhaustively search on the census entries myself.

I agree with the view that relying on others to look stuff up for you isn't really very stimulating. Well, not for me at any rate - no challenge. Nothing beats the thrill of finally cracking a puzzle.

Penny, I would appreciate a personal response to the e-mails that I have sent to the history board moderators. I neither provoked, attacked or offended but merely pointed out the truth. If the truth is offensive then I suggest that the moderator/host needs to re-examine what they consider is offensive taking into account the policies that operate on all Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ boards. It would appear that the interpretation on this board if say applied to UKN or WN on Five would mean the removal of virtually 100% of the posts made.

If the comments made in your final paragraph were intended for my consumption then I find those offensive and would ask for their removal. This is applying the same standards are you are and no more. You will note from my posting history that I do delight in being supportive and enthusiastic and spent most of my free time last night helping a board member. However, there is help and there is help. Some people are advocating doing no work for themselves but relying on the goodwill of other people. This is not fair on those who willingly give up a great deal of their time helping others and doing look ups and offering advice or routes for further research. If this sort of attitude by certain people of asking others to do all the work for them continues then those who do help and assist may find their goodwill, support and enthusiasm evaporating quite quickly. Then where will we be? This happens on the rootsweb lists that the particular poster advocated. People wise up and then new people come along and are treated with scepticism and unfavourably because of the selfish behaviour of a small few. It will happen on this board if you are not careful.

I would say more regarding the interpretation of the house rules but would prefer to keep that part of the conversation private, hence my e-mails.

I look forward to a private e-mail response.

    Dear Isabel

Yes you are right - I did make a mess of my message, and I have asked the moderators to remove it. I had in the back of my mind that other new members of the board could be reading my post, and I wanted to reinforce the particularly courteous character that has developed in this community of family research enthusiasts, but I should have re-read my message before posting! Any one visiting this board can see the rich contribution you are making.

I have handed on your query as to why you have not yet received a reply from the moderators.

    Regards, Penny

    Thanks Penny.

I have received a response from the mods that I am less than happy about because I fail to see how you can hear a 'tone' through the written word. However, let us move on. I appreciate your response and also your honesty. A rare thing indeed on the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ boards!
