The birth should be on Scotland's People website and his army record should be at The National Archives, Kew, there is a research service there or you could use a researcher.

Scotland has all ways had its own distinct Birth, Death and Marriage and Census system. The present system came in on 1st January 1855. The information recorded on our certificates is more detailed in that time of birth/death has all ways been recorded. You will also find cross referencing easier as the birth certificates from 1856 onwards record parents' marriage date and c.1861 place of marriage. In 1855 even more information was recorded such as birthplace of parents and their ages and previous children of the marriage etc.

Scotlandspeople will allow you to search for births 1855-1904. If you are in Edinburgh then the records are kept at New Register House at the east end of Princes Street. Approx Β£17 wil allow you in for the day. Once in you can search the indexes and refer to microfilms/fiches of the original entries. You are allowed to write the details down rather than buy the original certificate.

The Church of Scotland Baptism and Marriage registers for 1854 and before were deposited with the General Register Office for Scotland when the 1855 system started so it is possible to refer to the Old Parish Registers in one place, rather than the County Archive system. It is not presently possible to review the Old Parish Registers online.
