I know that my ancestors were a family of farmers and butchers. On one of my ancestors marriage certificates dated 1857 and on his birth certificate dated 1830 it states fathers occupation as farmer, yet on the 1851 Census at the age of 64 fathers occupation is stated as being agricultural labourer, his address being that of a cottage not a farm. Would I be correct in thinking that his status would change if he had passed the farm over to his eldest son ?
