My grandmother lived for a brief period in the 1930s at an address in Lewisham 'Lewisham District Association for the Care of Friendless Girls'. Does anyone know exactly what a 'friendless girl' is??? I'm guessing its a pregnant unmarried girl with nowwhere else to turn. I've contacted Lewisham Local Studies and am awaiting their reply but if anyone can help in the meantime it would be very much appreciated.
The lady concerned was known as Anne Jones, does she appear in your family?
    Thanks

I think you may well have guessed correctly but equally it could have meant a place of refuge for prostitutes and other women of so called ill repute. Either way, they didn't have many friends back then!
