I have come across the first/forename 'Horn' on two occasions now.
Was this an actual first name or is it short for something? Am I misreading the entry?
If anyone would like to check the entry is on the 1851 census under the name 'Horn Appleyard', born in 1847 and living in Whitwood.
Hi Lovepie1977,
Had a look at the original 1851 census return and when enlarged it does look like HORN. Also had a look through Oxford Names Companion and Horn does not appear to be short hand for another name either.
Do you want the details of the 1851 census family?
Regards
Spike

Thanks for your quick response!
I have the details of the family - I am just exploring the 1851 census online for the first time today. However, thank you for the offer.
sorry to butt in but does this mean that the Ancestry.co.uk 1851 is finally up and running???
Yep
excelent
although I dare say that this sentiment will be replaced by banging my head once I realise that yet again people arent there or something else equally frustrating, lol
Cheers
Rich
For what it's worth...
there's a little town in the Hunsruck area of Germany named Horn.
Could 'Horn' have been the mother's maiden name? One of my relatives had the first name HART, which turned out to have been his mother's maiden name.
Though the mothers maiden name was often used as a middle name, I too have ancestors whose first name was the mothers maiden name. Looking at some of the census's there are some pretty unusual first names out there.
