Hi. I am a newbie to genealogy. But so far have found out my G grandfather, James Hargreaves lived in Lawley street Birmingham when he died in 1913 at the age of 38. He was therefore born in 1875, my father says in Lancashire. His wife was Catherine, who I know nothing more about. How do I find out if he had brothers or sisters and who his parents were. On my grandparents wedding cert, it says he was a shopkeeper.

If were you I'd try to locate him on the 1901 census. This is available online on two websites:

www.census.pro.gov.uk - this is the public record office website which operates on a pay-per-view basis. It is very simple to use.

    OR

www.ancestry.co.uk - this is a subscription site which has the 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891 and 1901 census returns for England and Wales. I have found it to be excellent value for money and they are shortly adding the 1851 census to their collection.

In addition, the 1881 census is available free at www.familysearch.org

I did a quick search on the 1901 census and found there were 17 people with the name James Hargreaves born in Lancashire between 1874-1876 (it is always best to use a margin of error). Unfortunately I cannot nail one down for you without further information.

Another approach would be to try to obtain his birth certificate. This can be done through the website www.1837online.com. This is again a pay-per-view site but it is comprehensive and very professional. Moreover, as you know roughly the date of birth it should make it cheaper. Once you have potential index numbers you can send for the certificates - it costs Β£7 each.

You could search this free website which should give you the information for free. It is only transcribed up to about 1910 but is worth a free search firstly and it gives you all the info you need to purchase certificates.

    Thanks Carolinelise and everyone.

This is truly a fascinating hobby, even so early into it. Where did you get the details from? Source info RG/132867 Folio 157 pg 37 sched 225?

James and caroline had a son and daughter Joseph and Rose, I know Joseph, my gfather, was born 14/05/1905 and died in 1975. Do you thinkn it is the correct Joseph and Catherine?

    Keith,
the source was the 1901 census.
I looked through most of the other James Hargreaves but their wives were not called Catherine.
Looking a little deeper would need a birth certificate.
James's birth place Attercliffe is Sheffield Yorkshire.
With your information I have taken a look at the birth indexes for jun quarter of 1905. There are 5 Joseph Hargreaves indexed. But i'm sure going on the census data yours is
    Joseph Hargreaves jun 1905 Aston 6d 334.
If you want the other 4 indexes just shout and i'll post them for you.
I'm still trawling through the 1891 census trying to see if i can pinpoint James with a family. Will keep you informed if I find anything.
    best wishes
    caroline

I would thoroughly recommend BMD website but i'm biased as i transcribe for them. As mentioned before 1837 online is excellent resource.

Carolinelise, thanks again. As its half term I am away for a week tomorrow, but when I return I will join one of the sites you mention either BMD (is that UKBMD?) or 1837 I think. My GFather Joseph was definitely born in May as far as I know in Gt Brook Street.
