I know that my great grandfather was born in Camblesforth, Yorkshire around 1852. The websites I have used have failed to find him. How can I get a copy of his birth certificate?
What web sites have you searched?
FreeBMD is not complete. 1837online (for which you pay to view the index itself but searches are free) should hold the details but if they don't appear in the year that you think they should then you will need to check other years either side. Sometimes registrations were made late for a myriad of reasons and sometimes the actual birth date is very different to the date that corresponds on other records. You should also bear in mind that some registrations were never made and that the GRO index does have errors.
Otherwise you could check the fiches/CD's of the GRO index for free at your local archives. They usually hold such records for the years you are looking into.
Once you have the GRO reference then you can apply for the certificate.
I'm not far from Camblesforth, if he's buried there as well, would be pleased to go and take a look for you. His baptism may be recorded in IGI - did you already look there?

Thanks for the offer. However, as you may gather, I'm fairly new to this and don't know when/where he died.
What is IGI?
Thanks

Thanks for the reply, it's looking like I'll have to use fiche (I've already used FreeBMD and 1837
Thanks
Another place to look is at the under used site:
www.ukbmd.org.uk
If you enter the county and follow the links you can see many "local" details and helpers.
Often there are links to the local Family history societies.
Thanks, I'll try that
No problem if you click on the link next to the text about IGI in my message, that will take you to the right page. From there, you can go to the Parish you want, and do a surname search, it's really useful Happy hunting
