    Hi,
I'm not sure if anyone will be able to unravel the mystery of my gr grandmother - Kate Duncan. I cannot find a birth/death certificate and she only appears on one census (1901).
I believe she was born c1877 in Sunderland. In 1901 she was "visiting" her soon to be in-laws and later that year married Thomas Dagg. On her marriage certificate, it states she was aged 23 and her father was William Duncan, engine man. William wasn't a witness to the wedding.
I also know she died around 1966-7 because I remember it but can't find her death cert.
As they married shortly after the 1901 census, I checked the address she gave and her family do not live there... but one of the witnesses lived nearby. Now this is as far I have got for years!!! I doubt if Kate gave her correct age on her wedding certificate as her youngest son was born when she would have been 50, she kept this secret all her life. Through genesreunited I found one of her grandsons widows who told me that when they cleared her house they found a baptism certificate of William Duncan, he was born in Ireland around 1843. I thought this was the breakthrough... but no I found William on all the censuses and he did have a daughter in 1877 but not called Kate, I have traced her marriage and 1901 census appearance so it cant be the same woman.
I believe Kate ran away from home when she found she was pregnant (true, but the baby didn't survive) and she borrowed an identity for the 1901 census and her marriage and kept it all her life. Will this remain a mystery forever...

Found this entry on the free bmd. Isnt Kate short for Catherine. If you apply for it at the local registrar and add extra info with the application ie fathers name. They will refund the fee to you if it doesnt match. Its worth a try.

A big thank you Busy beaver!
I think this may be the right one!
Reason being my mother was saddled with some middle names that had some importance to her mother/grandmother but we have been trying to unravel the significance.
Middle names are Robinson & Henderson. I found the Robinson but Henderson was beyond me.
I shall apply for her birth certificate..
    Thanks again
    Jenny

If you have the parish where she was married, you could look for the burial of the child in the church records.
    Have tried the site:
www.ukbmd.org.uk (not the same site as FreeBMD!)?
Enter the county and you will be able to access a lot of local information, probably through the local societies. It may help you find some of the other links.
    Good Luck

    Hi,
Thanks, I have details of all Kate's children, grandchildren and gr grandchildren and now gr gr granchildren! it is only Kate I am missing.
Kate Dagg (nee Duncan) died 1966-1967 in the Pallion area of Sunderland in the parish of St Lukes. I have sent off for her birth certificate as given earlier, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed this is the right one. I found the same Catherine again in 1891 and it apears there her father was called William and she had a sister Margaret which is correct - I had already found the family earlier but couldn't be sure it was the right one until the connection with the Henderson family was made in 1881.
