I am trying to trace a Joan Purcell born 1897 but I do not know where. She married Percival Simpkin in 1921 in Knaresborough she did not have a profession registered on the wedding cert her fathers name was Thomas Purcell and he was a land steward. Their address is stated as 14 Victoria Ave Harrogate. I am getting desperate for any info. I hope somebody can please help.

Having Purcell's in my own tree, may I suggest that you look under all derivations, deviations of the name: Pearsell, Pearsall, Pursell, Parsell, Parcell and so on. It took me three years to find my 2 x Great Grandmother's birth certificate because of the deviations of the name.

Have you tried using the 'Exact' search facility on the Ancestry website to look for Joan Purcell on the 1901C?
By leaving out the surname but entering all other information which you know, you might end up finding the variation which the message below hints at.
For example, you have 'Joan', year of birth '1897', that her relationship to the head was 'daughter' and maybe a place or county of birth, 'Knaresborough' or 'Yorkshire'. The search facility will then give a list of all 'Joans' with those characteristics. If you then scroll through the 'P' surnames then you might find a Purcell variation and/or a misspelling. I don't know how many Joans were born in Yorkshire in 1897, plus or minus say 1 or 2 years, but it might not be that many and might shorten your search.
I hope that makes sense and helps.

Thank you for both replies to my question. They will both help me in my search.
