Hi again,
another name from my family .Cowdock.
I know there are not many about with this name. My mother was Ada May Cowdock Born 15:5:1914 died 8:1:1996 and having lived all her life in Newcastle-under-Lyme. Her father was Joseph Henry Cowdock (From Stoke-on-Trent)born 22:7:1874 died 12:5:1945 he was married to Ida Harris. What I am again trying to find is the names of his parents. I do know his father was Richard Gates Cowdock c 1839, but who was he married to? that is the question and when did he marry. I am trying to complie these details in order to fulfill a dream to go as far back as I can and make a family tree for my own two daughters. Cowdock is an unusual name and I believe there might only be around 5 actual Cowdock's (by birth) in England and these are my cousins and uncle.. the name seems to have died away.any help always appreciated. thank you

There is a website where you can check on the frequency of surnames in 2002, taken from the Office of National Statistics database. It suggests there were only 7 Cowdocks around then, so it is indeed a pretty rare name. Should make your research easier though!
Hi Anisel...
I like the website, a new one on me!
My husbands surname came up with less than 3000 so that is great, I have traced his line back to the Elizabethan English settlers in Ireland one of them was listed in Oliver Cromwell's army 1649 and there were on 8 of them in that particular Irish county at that time. I am now trying to find what part of England they orginated from... so far I've narrowed it down to three possible areas: the west country, London or Cambridge.
Crafty-Lass, try searching on Ancestry.co.uk or familysearch.org - you have the names, rough dates and locations - you are missing out on the fun of finding the answers, it is very rewarding when you finally find the right family and can complete the next rung of the ladder and you may miss out finding unknown sibblings along the way if you only rely on others to do the searches. Practice searching the sites - your confidence will grow the more you use the genealogy sites - after all, you have mastered this one ok!
