I have found my Nan Catherine Taylor, as mentioned in my previous post - Born in Malaysia. Her father , a crown agent, must have died and she and her mum must have returned between her birth in 1882 and 1891 and it makes sense according to the 1891 census her siblings were born in Gibraltar, Hong Kong. I can't seem to read where she was born. I tracked her through her sister Helen Taylor born 1871 and living in Northumberland but born in Gibraltar. Can anyone decipher her bith place please. Her brothers name isn't all that clear but looks like Ernest.
Many thanks

It looks like Perah Straits (British Subject)
I googled Perah and it is on the Malay Peninsula. It didn't actually give the word 'Straits' after it though. Catherine's brother Ernest was 11 and born South China Seas, (British Subject). Their mother, Maria is listed as Widow, 47 born Scotland, Edinburgh.
hope that helps
Jenny

Thanks for that Jenny. Thats the confirmation I needed as my dad told me his mum was born in the Malay states. So I've found her, her mum and siblings and I know her dads name was Daniel. Best get back to Scotlands people to track back, though without his age, its going to be tricky.
Thanks again
Jo

Hi Jo,
On Scotlands people, if you search the marriages and banns post 1855 and put in Daniel Taylor, goom + Maria (no surname) as the bride with year range 1865-1871 it brings up 1 result... (I calculated this from Maria's age 18-24, when her first daughter was born in 1871) Unfortunately I don't have any credits for Scotlands People as there is no Scottish history in my family...
Good luck with the search!
Jenny

Having had another look at the 1891 image, I think Spike is right...

Though the credits I had at Scotlands people expired, before I purchased any more,I did a search with just the name Maria & Daniel Taylor but it says it requires the spouses surname. Though this may well be my G Grandma ( Maria Dooley) I need some confirmation and going into Scotland is a new area for me. Regrettably I do not know anything of this side of the family except what I have unearthed on on the 1891 & 1901 census. So I don't know of any siblings at any level except for my Grandfather's.

Finding her sister Helen Heen? - Keen on the 1891 census is how I traced her in the first place. Though Catherine has lost a couple of years when she got married in 1912 (Aged 28)threw me off for a while there. I expect she did that because my grandad was 28 and she didn't want to be older.

Looks like this could be the one. Bought some more credits for Scotlands people and seen the marriage cert. Very poorly copied but seems he is in some kind of Highland regiment and resides at Edinburgh Castle. As he was a Crown Agent, its starting to make sense. I guess I need to do some more digging. Can I get access to this Midlothian IGI as the marriage cert is so poorly copied, I can't even see the date clearly?
Thank again
