I need help demolishing a brick wall. I'm trying to locate details of my 2X Great Grandfather, Jeremiah. I believe he was born in London, probably in the Islington area in 1861. I do know that he married a Grace Banks in Beverley, Hull in 1884 and they had a son John James O'Connor, born 1887. Jeremiah was a private in the East Yorkshire regiment, based at Victoria Barracks Beverley when he married [I have a copy of the certificate]. I've found him on the 1891 census with Grace and his son, in Hull. Grace died in 1891 and by 1901 his son was living with his grandmother. I can't find Jeremiah before or after these dates with any level of confidence. Army records have been checked to no avail under both the surnames O'Connor and Connor. If you have any information that may help I will be extremely grateful. Heres hoping!

There is a Jeremiah O'connor in the 1891 census living in Stepney. born London aged 31 and living with his sisters Bridget & Jane and he states he is married. Next door is Jeremiah O'Connor aged 54 with his two grandaughters Catherine and Julis Barnett. Could this be him?

I don't think this is the right one. I have him in the 1891 census with his wife and son in Hull. Thanks for trying anyway.

Thanks for this. It might be the right one but I have no way of confirming. I have him for definite with his wife in 1891 in Hull. But his wife died shortly after the census was taken and by 1901 his son is living with his Grandmother in Middlesbrough. It seems Jeremiah is on his own in 1901, and possibly on his own in 1881 as I can't find him for definite then. Thanks for the information though, I will try to follow it up.

    Hi LilacShaz,
Do not forget that a lot of the Irish dropped the O' when they came to England
    for Anglo Irish reasons.
