I am looking for some information on Harry Thornton, an actor performed in panto as well as possibly Gilbert and Sullivan all round the country. All that I know is that he performed at Watford Palace, and was performing in Aladdin in Bradford in 1922 when his daughter Rosie married(to Robert Oliver) and possibly died before 1930 as he is not in Who's Who for that year. I have no certificates for Rosie or Harry, Rosie might of been born around 1897.The names are unfortunately very common, and I don't know if Harry was short for Harold or Henry.

Is there anywhere that has records of actors from this period ? I would dearly love to be able to find a photo of him,and find out about the scandal that he supposedly caused when he married the daughter of a wealthy (possibly shipping) family, who then disowned her. Apparently he died while on tour an no one knows where he was buried. I think that he was a northerner, but because he moved about I can't be sure.

    Hi,

Type Harry Thornton in the search field of google and you will be surprised at the wealth of info there is on him. He did indeed sing Gilbert and Sullivan - PooBah in the Mikado and also in HMS Pinefore both 1907. You can even purchase a copy of the recording from some sites....
