I am researching the life of Robert Badman who I am led to believe was Tailor Merchant to the Royal Court in Siam in the late 1880's.

He returned to London and setup business in 158 the Strand, and became a director of Simpsons Restaurant.

Samuel & Mary Britain had a daughter Frances in February 1855 who later married Robert Badman.

As you can see I have little information on which to base my research I am seeking to confirm the above and hopefully add to the story.

Simpsons was bought by Edmund Cathie in 1864 from the originator of the tavern. He in turn sold it to Richard D'Oyly Carte (Savoy Group) in 1898. It is still part of the Savoy Hotel. Perhaps contacting the Savoy Hotel might help.

Another route would be to examine old accounts and board details and minutes of meetings for the Savoy. The Savoy Hotel Ltd is still a registered company in the UK. If you visit Companies House web site you will learn how you could do this.

It might also be worth considering whether Robert was a member of a livery company as this would provide another route for obtaining further information on him. Livery company records are found at the LMA and the Guildhall.

I notice from the 1891 census:

Harry Alfred Badman Head M 42 East India Merchant Walcot Bath Somerset
Frances M Badman Wife M 35 ?Wallington? Cheshire
Robert A Badman Son 8 Siam Bangkok
Gertrude E Badman Dau 7 Chester Cheshire
    21 Ferntower Road Islington RG12/173 Folio 8 Page 10

Harry has the same occupation as an employer and East India Merchant on the 1901 census and young Robert is an apprentice, of what I cannot read but he is an apprentice.

There are other Robert Badman's on the census indices 1861-1901 but I noted this one because of the wife's name and age fitting with the information that you detailed, despite the husbands name being different. Maybe your family lore got a little mixed up on its retelling, a common problem!

Much information concerning the East India merchants, the company and so on can be found at the British Library who hold the most extensive collection. You can check their web site as to what records they do hold and how to obtain a readers ticket.
