My husbands grandfather fought in both the Boer War and W.W.1. I have found via Documents Online that he served in the Royal Highlanders Service Corps during W.W.1. Can anyone tell me how to find anything about his service in the Boer War. His name was Dent Stowell and he was from Burnley,Lancashire. The National Archives website thoroughly confuses me and I am afraid that as I have various health problems and also live in Yorkshire it is a bit of a problem visiting the place. Would be most grateful for any help or suggestions. Cheers.

The records online at The National Archives, Kew, are the medal rolls but his service file may help, but is not easy to use. Some First World War army sevice records include the Boer War papers but not always. A number of the army service files were lost when the Army Pay Office was hit by a Germn bomb in 1940 so it may not survive or if he served after 1922 those records are still with the Ministry of Defence in Glasgow for which a fee is charged.

There is a document search service at The National Archives or a private researcher might help.
